Ridiculous wedding ideas you've seen

Going through the wedding boards on Pinterest, it seems like the wedding industry has created more and more asinine, totally unnecessary things wedding related. My personal favorites are guest books that require a ton of work; fingerprint trees, wishing trees, advice boxes, time capsules, writing a memory of you and the bride or groom, what they should name their kids... Etc. anyone seen any other ridiculous wedding day traditions or things the industry is trying to convince us brides we NEED to have??

Re: Ridiculous wedding ideas you've seen

  • I don't know that I've seen anything rediculous, but I do feel bad because pinterest has definitely jaded me. It's so hard to have an original thought these days.

Like, the last wedding I was it, they had the ring bearer hold a sign that said "Hey "groom's name", here comes your bride!" Which, first time I saw that, thought it was so cute, and everyone at the wedding thought it was cute, but I couldn't help rolling my eyes, and I felt bad for feeling so cynical about it.

Also, I can't see a mason jar without rolling my eyes these days either.
  • I'm with you there. I feel the idea of a rustic chic wedding is gonna burn out REAL quick because Pinterest is sucking the life out of it

This is a shame, too.  I love the idea of a rustic wedding (didn't have one personally, but I think it is a great idea), but in a few years post-Pinterest I think we are all going to be like "oh dear god not another one"

  • Photo booths.   I just don't see the point.  I mean, maybe the first time I saw one I though it was cool.  After that, it was just copying someone else's not-so-great-to-begin-with idea.

I thought it was cute too, its a nice way to have a cheaper wedding and its one of the themes that incorporates a TON of DIY stuff so there's a lot there for the bride who loves hands on projects. But it's becoming like.. 75 of the wedding themes I see now.. And the bride is always so proud of her unique idea.. It's just getting playyyyyed out

I can't stand cupcakes at weddings. Last one I went to that had them only offered chocolate, which I hate, and they were bone dry with nasty frosting. Don't know if it had anything to do with being cupcakes but that just left me with a bad impression of the idea.

  • Anything with animals/ pets involved. I haven't been to a wedding like this but there have been too many brides on this site who thought their idea of having their pet involved in the wedding, or using fish as centerpieces, would be a great idea.

I'm on the fence with this. I personally don't care at all if we have one, but people seem to enjoy them, so idk if I should get one just for my guests?? Last wedding I went to with FI family didn't have one and everyone had a great time, we didnt even miss it. So we might just save the money. This hurts my argument with FI that we aren't doing favors bc the photo booth is the favor, but whatever.

  • I like photobooths.  We didn't have one as that's not the vibe I was going for.  But, we've been to two weddings that had them and they were a huge hit.  The photos we got to take home were really cute.
  • While I think photobooths can be fun, I definitely didn't want one at my wedding since I've continually seen guests lined up for them and not on the dance floor.

I also really don't like cupcakes. Like a PP said, they are not cheaper and I've found they're more dry and honestly I don't think they look that great. It reminds me of a child's birthday party.
Another one is matching "cool" shoes for everyone in the wedding. Don't get me wrong, if the bride or groom want to wear cowboy boots or converse or whatever, fine, go for it. But having everyone in the WP wearing them is just plain silly.
    Posted by StageManager14
<div>I hate the casual shoe trend with fancy attire. OK, I get it, you and everyone else are quirky. I totally get it when brides wear flats or simple sandals if they don't want heels, but would you wear cowboy boots to prom or with any other evening gown??</div>
  • We had a photobooth of sorts, but largely because our photographer brought along a friend of hers looking to break into the business, so she sat at one spot in the reception hall and took photos of anyone who wanted them. However the backdrop was just a wall and the guests didn't get printouts, but I did end up with some pretty kick-ass family photos.

Candy bars are out for me, at the end of the night typically the last thing I want to think about is more sugar/food. And this isn't really related to Pinterest but the multiple wedding/party thing is really getting to me. My BIL is currently discussing getting married, then having a reception, then having another reception in Indiana where his fiancee is from.

At my high school prom fish were the centerpieces, but it was very common to dare people to eat the goldfish (so freaking gross) so over half the fish got eaten by idiotic high school boys.  I would never ever consider fish as a centerpiece solely because I would be afraid they'd get eaten.

On topic though, I don't understand multiple dresses.  Rehearsal dress, Dress dress and reception dress?  This makes sense if you have a huge long train and everything, but since my style is was more on the casual side of things I don't understand getting a dress you already plan on being uncomfortable in for longer than the whole wedding takes.

And, I don't want the rustic/vintage-y chic stuff to go out of style, I like it!  Stupid pinterest.

Yes I hateeee the whole wearing casual shoes with formal attire. It just looks dumb to me. As for the tuxedos in the daytime, I think when you do groomsmen photos before the ceremony, they're gonna be in tuxes in the daytime?? This will be the case at my wedding, which is at night.. But we'll have photos of the grooms in tuxes during the day because that's what they're wearing that night.

  • I think it's ridiculous to have a reception back home when you have a destination wedding far away. It feels like nothing but a bid for gifts to me. I went to one of these last weekend...250 guests, the "bride" was in her wedding gown, first dances, bouquet toss, cake cutting, etc. It really bothered me, but I felt obligated to go even though I wasn't important enough to receive an invitation to the actual wedding. People can be so grossly rude.

IKR? It did rain on her wedding day...(and she got married standing in the rain) so at least she got some sunny pics the second time around, but I couldn't help but feel like an awful person for being a teensy bit happy it rained.

  • I agree with all of this!  I actually joined Pinterest, but I have only gone on twice.  I guess I don't get it, because I didn't see anything that really interested me.  If I want design ideas, I google information, or look in craft books.  I am doing my invitations completely by hand and did my save the dates too, but I designed them before going on Pinterest.

Oh and the themes confuse me too.  I have been asked what our "theme" is and I give a blank stare back.  I assume the theme is wedding.  Lol  And the cupcakes, Ugh!  I don't know why that became a thing.  It reminds me of the dessert in a mason jar fad.  Why would you do that?  I prefer my dessert the normal way.

I will admit I looked into a photo booth, but I wanted a traditional one.  Not the backdrop with props, where 8 people can be in a "booth" shot.  An actual booth that only 2-3 people can squeeze into and no props.  It doesn't work with our budget, so we won't have one, but I was happy to see that they DO still exist.

Garden Maven, your babies are adorable! Besides each other, our Graycie girl is the light of my FI and I's lives. She ran into my house last spring because a big fat tom cat was chasing her and my door was open. She was crying at me and after I chased the big mean thing away. Graycie jumped into my lap and cuddled with me for hours. She slept in the crook of my arm that night and she was mine forever. Sigh. I love cats....now back to weddings...

<div>Thank you!  The dark one is Zephyr and the light one is Simon.  Simon is a huge momma's boy and Zephyr decided that my FI was his human soon after we got him.  As soon as FI gets home from work it is non-stop meowing until Zephyr gets his cuddles.  Lol  My older sister brought home a kitten when I was one year old, so cats have always been in my life.  I also had the best dog ever for a short time.  We were her fifth home and you could not find a better dog.  FI had a hamster growing up, but that was it.  Luckily he has turned into a cat person.  :-)</div>

  • I'm actually a fan of cupcakes.  At places we tasted/called, cupcakes were actually significantly less expensive than a cake, which is why we decided to go with them.  Perhaps this is regional, though.  If they hadn't been cheaper, we would have just gone with a traditional cake.

We also did a photobooth, and our guests loved it.  I do agree that they are trendy and will probably get overdone, but we received so many compliments on having one.  And now we have a scrapbook of all the pictures, which I love. While our photobooth always had a line, our dance floor was also never empty, so in my experience, it didn't take away from guests dancing.

One thing I hate at weddings is reception dresses.  It just seems so unneccessary to me. I also hate activities that solicit money from guests.  Your wedding is not a fundraiser.

This is the type we had. It was an actual box. It wasn't meant to be trendy, we got it because we love them. Everything we see one we always stop and take photos.   I have a collection of us in various places in photobooths from the mall to the shore. It was only fitting for us to have one on our wedding day. I personally don't like the large group ones that are not actually booths as all but a background with a photographer.

  • There are a lot of wedding ideas I see on Pinterest that are just dumb to me. Most of the ones I find dumb are really AW-ish, such as the bridesmaid writing a letter to the groom about how to make the bride happy (which just seems like a waste of everyone's time). IDK, my wedding day was mainly about me marrying H, not about making the whole day, from sunrise to sunset, all about ZOMG I'M THE BRIDE!!!

However, I also have to say that I'm not the kind of person who will dislike something nice at a wedding just because it's been done before. I don't care how many weddings I've been to with photobooths. If there's a photobooth there and I feel like taking pictures, I will. If not, I'll let others enjoy the fun. No skin off my nose. Same with cupcakes. I love cupcakes, and I don't care how "trendy" cupcakes have become. I also don't care the bride and groom's reasoning for having them, even if it was a misguided attempt to save money. If I don't want a cupcake, I won't have one.

The only things I would really side-eye or think were ridiculous at weddings would be things that are against etiquette or against guest comfort. I would roll my eyes at anything completely AWish, but it wouldn't make me hate that wedding or anything.

  • Wow!  I thought I was the only one thinking all these things.  I don't go on Pinterest because it makes my head hurt.  I try to focus on what I've wanted when I've been a guest.  And it has always been good music, good food, short waiting times, well organized.  The rest has never kept my attention much as a guest.  If I put it in terms of percentages I would say the four things I just listed were about 65-75% important to me with everything else being cool to see but not really that important.  I was a guest at a fancy wedding with a photo booth and live band.  But it took forever to get the cocktail hour started, food served and the live band wasn't that good.  So as a result the rest just didn't make up for that and we left kind of early.  I'm having a fancy one too.  But my priority is still get married, good food, good music, short waiting times, well organized.

I guess what I had in mind is those dresses that rip off the bottom and become so short like, club dress short. Tea length dresses can be very classy and sometimes more fitting for the time of day you get married.

Hah!  That's exactly my reaction!  I mean do most people have a different theme?  Some people are almost disappointed-sounding when I tell them that there is no theme.  Maybe I should start telling them that the theme is pirates or clowns or something that you'd see at a kids' party!

I actually had cupcakes at a wedding for the very first time last night.  And aside from our cheesecake at our wedding (which I'm unfairly biased because duh, it was our wedding, and because in general I prefer cheesecake), they were the best wedding dessert I'd ever had.  Around here, wedding cake tends to be dry and just COVERED with nasty, too sweet frosting.  So I was pumped for my carrot cake cupcake with cream cheese buttercream frosting.  I ate it with my fork still though.

I also saw my first (in person) candy buffet last night.  I guess trends take awhile to hit the upper midwest.
