CAKE ON AIR FLIGHT BACK HOME

We are getting married in Vegas on 2-19-10 and I am wanting to bring back my top tier of our wedding cake for our anniversary, and I was wondering if anyone knows if and how hard that is going to be with the airlines (US airways).

Thanks for everyones help.

Re: CAKE ON AIR FLIGHT BACK HOME

  • I've carried a lot of food on several different airlines - My sister has even managed to get a quart of grandma's home-made pasta sauce on her flight from daytona to boston (this, I'm sure, was a stretch with the liquid rule).  Since cake isn't a "liquid" just make sure its packed well, if you have a small cooler, I would suggest using that as one of your carry-ons.  If anyone asks, tell them what it is.  Don't try to check it, it won't make it home in one piece.
  • People who travel to places like the BVI for bareboat charters (no captain or crew) often take their own frozen meat, etc...  I don't understand that, we had no problem buying what we wanted, prices weren't out of line, etc. but whatever so yes, you can take food.  Obviously you'll want to pack it carefully. Remember it could be counted as a carry-on for you, I would call the airline and ask.
  • When you keep it, take the cardboard off, wrap it in 5 layers of saran wrap then 5 of foil. Maybe ask the baker if they have a box that size and wrap it all up, then pack it.  Its not supposed to look pretty, just last for you to eat in a year.  And who knows, maybe you can just ship it in a flat rate box or something overnight with some dry ice or cool packs

  • I brought mine back from Las Vegas with no problems. The security people loved seeing it go through and all commented on it (one asked to see it when I told her it was chocolate).

The flight attendants were very kind, and when I told them what I had, they stored it up with their stuff, and the box made it home fine (tjhey did not count it as a carryon for me).

The biggest problem I had was for part of the time in the airports, I'd carried it in the top of a bag instead of in my hands, so the top layer had slid. So, instead of saving it for our anniversary, we ate on it for a week :) BUT  - it made it home!

Do not mess in the affairs of dinosaurs because you are crunchy and taste good with ketchup.
I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
