Both of us changing last names

I'm not sure if anyone has any expierence with this, but my FI and I have been seriously talking about taking on a new last name instead of me taking his. I don't mind either way, but FI has a very estranged father (became physically abusive to him and sexually to his female siblings) and his mother has gone back to her maiden name. He no longer wants to carry this last name and thinks since I have to change mine anyways we could change together. 

Logistically does anyone know how this is done? I know its fairly easy for a bride to show a marriage certificate to get the grooms last name, but is it so easy when both want to change after a marriage ceremony?

As a PP pointed out, you don't have to change your name just because you're getting married. Why doesn't he take your name? Then you only have to worry about paperwork for one person.

Wouldnt it make more sence for him to take your last name instead of both of you changing your names?

It depends on your state. Here in NJ he would need a court order and his name change would have to be done before the wedding so it appears on the marriage license- or else you couldn't take that name. Or at least that's what my lawyer friend told me when we both considered taking DH's mom's last name for a hot second since he never had a relationship with his father.  It was more trouble that it was worth.
