Glasses

Random Question:

Does anyone wear glasses, not contacts, and did you wear them walking down the isle?

I wear glasses, have an astigmatism in both eyes and can't see near or far.  Contacts don't work for me at all; my eyes get dry and bright red within 15-20 min and the contacts fall out regardless of what drops I use.  I've tried all the newest brands that have come out over the past 10 years with no luck.  Eye doc says I'm out of luck with contacts.

I can see where I'm going and won't bump into anything, but can't see faces well without my glasses.  I'm debating on whether I should wear my glasses or just go with limited eye-sight.  I don't wear my glasses if I don't have to because I just do not like the way they look on me. So unless I'm at work, people don't usually see me with my glasses.  Vain, I know.

So I'm curious, would you wear glasses down the isle and see everything crystal clear or go a little fuzzy for looks?  I think my best asset are my green eyes, and they hide behind my glasses.  I know I can take them off for the pics - and laser surgery is not an option.

Re: Glasses

  • I've seen a few brides who choose not to wear glasses the day of the wedding when they normally wear them, and I think it looks weird.  It would be like a brunette going blonde for her wedding day.  But if you don't always wear them that's different.  I guess it just depends on how well you can see, and how much you care to see.  I wear contacts way more regularly than glasses so this wasn't an issue for me.  But if I had an issue where I couldn't wear contacts for the day I would probably go without glasses for the ceremony and main pictures, and then wear them for the reception.  You want to be able to see what is going on, and not have everything be a blur for you.

  • I normally wear contacts, only glasses at night when I am home. I would have never worn my glasses for the wedding bc it just isn't me.

If you normally wear glasses, by all means I would wear them to the wedding. They are a part of you essentially. I definitely would want to see where I am walking and going, not to mention the strain on your eyes and possible headaches. Just talk to your photographer if you are worried about any reflection or squinting or anything like that.
  • Why not try to treat yourself to a new pair of glasses that have a low profile frame (or frame-less) so that your eyes don't get lost behind them?  You'll look great and also be able to see and take everything in.  I had the same problem with contacts years ago and swore I'd never wear them, but then I went to a new eye doctor and tried a few different pairs of them until I found a brand that worked fabulously.  If this isn't an option for you maybe consider new frames (if it's in the budget).  You're going to want to see all your planning coming together on your special day!

  • Can you see your FI and officiant's faces? If not, I would probably wear glasses, if so, well, during the ceremony you don't need to see much else.

But are you SURE contacts aren't an option? My mom has astygmatisms and she wears Acuvue Oasys for Astygmatism.
  • I think if people are used to seeing you with glasses they may find it odd if you don't wear them on your wedding day.  I wear contacts every day and would personally walk down the isle blind before I wore my glasses but that's because I only wear my glasses at night and they never see the outside world.

  • I wear glasses all the time because I have the same problem with contacts. Sometimes I can wear them for a few hours, sometimes they last all of three seconds until I take them out. I plan on getting a new pair of glasses for the wedding. I get them online, full prescription for about $6-$39 so it fits into the budget. If you want the website let me know. They have some really cute stuff.

  • Funny this post just came up, I fight wearing my glasses all of the time, and don't consider myself a "glasses wearer" even though I need to be! Got contacts on Friday, because it wouldn't work for me to wear glasses going down the aisle, and I wanted to be able to see FI's face! But, if you always wear glasses, I would definitely wear them, I agree with pp that said get a pair that is discreet if you want your beautiful green eyes to shine through :-)
  • I've worn glasses every day for the past three years or so, but before that, it was contacts.  I decided to go with contacts for the wedding because I'm not fond of my current frames and wasn't in a position to get new ones, while DH wore his mostly rimless glasses.  I'm sure people who've only seen me with glasses might have thought the pictures were a little weird, but most of my friends and family have seen me both ways.

I think you want to be able to see on your wedding day.  Think about it, you spend all this time working out the details and the day goes by so quickly, you want to be able to see the results of your efforts while you can.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I think that you should look like you on your wedding day.  If you wear glasses all day/every day (as I do) then wear them at your wedding.  I wore my glasses, because that's who I am.

I completely agree with dnbeach and her analogy to hair color.  I'd find it rather silly and pretentious to pretend one doesn't wear glasses when everyone at  the wedding knows she does.
"Trix, it's what they/our parents wanted. Why so judgemental? And why is your wedding date over a year and a half ago? And why do you not have a groom's name? And why have you posted over 12,000 posts? And why do you always say mean things to brides?" palegirl146
  • I do not intend to wear my glasses for my wedding and although I do not currently wear contacts I will be getting them shortly after the new year, due to insurance.  I do not have the option to go with out either due to a lazy eye which I do not what to appear in my pictures. I wore contact from the time I was 11 years old till I started driving.  These were before disposables were available for bad astigmatisms, once I started driving my custom weighted right lens would move and I wouldn't be able to see.  I tried a few times in the last 12 years but I had no luck with eyeglass stores getting me fitted into a comfortable pair and I was later told that with my eyes only a specialist would help me.  Wish me luck, I should have 11 months to find comfortable ones and get use to them again.

I have an astigmatism in both eyes and wear contacts daily with no problems.  I wear the Air Optix for astigmatism by Cibavision and they work great.  My eye dr tried switching me to hard lenses about 2 years ago because she thought they would be better for my eyes, but I hated them and couldn't stand using them.  Then we tried the Air Optix and they are amazing.  So you should definitely have those on your list to try.

I'm not sure if I tried the Air Optix.  I have 7 months to go so maybe I should get some and see how they work! New hope ! :)  Most of my contacts have caused a rash under the eyelid (ew ew ew ew ew ew) so it might be an allergy.

I also like the idea of getting a new pair that are less "noticeable".  I've seen these lighter frames - time to go shopping!  I need a new pair at any rate.

I need to wear the glasses, but I don't wear them ever unless I'm at work or driving (and on the computer, otherwise, the font is 10000x or I'll make a million typos).

Most people know me w/o glasses.  I have a really narrow face and they are a focal point when I wear them (so I feel).  I take them off whenever possible and keep them in my purse/car.

I think it also comes down to how comfortable I am wearing them - from a confidence standpoint, I guess.  I just went to my 10 yr HS reunion this weekend - glasses off the whole time.  I just "feel" ugly in them.  I'm thinking I might want to see, but I don't have the confidence to walk down the isle and feel as "pretty" as I could w/o them.
PS - I've had a self-confidence issue all my life.  Thought I would grow out of it!
