Ring Advice

My fiance gave me a diamond ring early in our relationship as somewhat of a promise ring (though he hates that terminology) / christmas present / I love you a lot ring. It was (until I got my engagement ring) the most beautiful ring I've ever seen (and I've worked in jewelry) and I cherish it as something he picked out all by himself and gave to me with so much meaning.

Well about 6 months ago - I took it into the jeweler that sold us the ring just for some routine maintenance (retipping a prong). Very VERY long story short - they've remade the ring twice, and have still yet to get it 100% right.  All the diamonds are still my diamonds, but the ring is no longer the exact same ring he gave me.  The style is very similar but they (the jeweler) can't seem to get it right - prongs still aren't fully done, gold is uneven - little things that shows lack of attention to detail. But they aren't all cosmetic - some affect how well stones will be held in place.  I've had them redo these problems multiple times, and it just isn't working.

SO - my long drawn out question to you ladies, is what would you do? The jeweler is offering to refund me the money (I would just want a refund on the mounting - take the diamond and reset it in something else), or have them try one more time to get it right and have the ring my FI gave me in the first place?

Re: Ring Advice

  • I would take it elsewhere.  They're clearly not up to intricate work. Jewelers who sell rings don't always have actual jewelry craft expertise. So sorry for all of your trouble with this!
  • The thing is - they are THE jeweler in Maryland. Considered the best of the best.  They hand craft custom rings all the time. I'm worried that if they can't do it - no one will be able to. But thanks for the advice :)

Hmmm.  Well then that's odd.  Don't know what to tell you then, sorry

Hopefully some other ladies will have advice.  Good luck to you.
  • Can I assume that you're taking it to Smyth's? They are a very reputable place, so I don't know if anybody else would be able to fix something they couldn't. But they also have great costumer service. Have you talked to a manager about it? I'd try atleast one more time. My friend had her diamond necklace repaired there and they lost it. They gave her a brand new one, with stones twice the size.

Was something terribly wrong with it that they had to do more than just routine maintenance? That seems so odd that they ended up remaking it twice.

  • Well obviously if they can't fix it right after one or two times - they're not as great as they say they are.

I'd take it somewhere else.  But that's just me.

    Btw - that's a gorgeous ring!

  • #1 Fab-boo-lous ring!  #2 They're only the premier jewler by opinion.  That doesn't mean they don't make mistakes.  If they aren't cutting it, then take it somewhere else.  If they are already offering to give you your money back, then that's a sign that they don't want to work on your ring anymore either.  Maybe find a jewler who specializes in custom ring repairs???

  • Take the ring elsewhere.  Like the previous posters said, just because they have the ring, doesn't mean that they make them in that store, it's probably outsourced to keep the costs down.  If they aren't able to repair it, take it somewhere else.

I know that Indian jewelers - who specialize in 22 and 24kt gold have someone crafty to fix just about anything you need to be done properly.
