Name Change Q!

After the wedding I want to change my middle name to my maiden name (dropping my old middle name) and change my last to my husbands.  Has anyone had any experience with trying to do this as opposed to just changing their last name?

Thanks!

I also was worried about this, I ended up hyphenating my name. I went to Social Security and was told that DMV may not make the change and if I change it with SS I would have to go to court to change it back. So instead of playing the game I stopped doing anything with SS and went right over to DMV, they had no problem doing this so then I went to SS office to change it with them.
I'm not sure how it works when you are changing your middle name, but I hope this helps.

kloire, I plan to do the same thing! My middle name is my mom's name and since she did the same thing to hers, she gave me her blessing to ditch my middle name. I hope it isn't too hard!

Does anyone have two middle names? Is it a pain on forms and such? Does it get mixed up? Do you just pick one to be your "middle initial"?

The DMV wouldn't let me change my middle initial (I think they all only use an initial the name isn't recorded) they said they had to go by the birth certificate.

However, I had a whole song and dance ready at the SS office and the woman looked at me and said "I don't really care, I can make it anything you want" so my SS card and passport is FirstName MaidenLastName DHLastName
But my drivers licence is fristname originalmiddleinitial DHLastName

Maybe it would have been different if I had done SS office first?? (you're suppose to anyway).

I carefully read the laws - it looks like you're suppose to change it in court which costs like $60 and takes a day of your life to get done - but still shouldn't be too complicated.

Thanks ladies!  I guess I didn't realize what a pain it was going to be!  I may end up just going to easy route and just changing my last name.  We'll see how motivated I feel when the time comes!

I went to SS, they didn't care what I chose, but warned me that DMV wouldn't do it.
My SS card read: first, maiden, married
My license read: First, original middle initial, misspelled married name

This proved to be my saving grace...  When I went back to renew my license a few months later, and corrected my last name's spelling, I got a gil who offered to take out my middle initial from the DMV system entirely.  YAY!

This solved my problem of having to pay the $90 Probate Court fee, and go through the paperwork trail with the Court.  The paperwork basically is a way of assuring that you're not changing your name to defraud anyone else in anyway.

I have since then become a Justice of the Peace with the State of NH and even after running my record and all the background checking they do, I was approved as first, maiden initial, married.
I don't think the middle name change is as big of a deal as DMV/State of NH makes it out to be, but for the statute that says you need to petition the Court to make the change...  In other states, there's NO issue with this at all.
