Sex/BC Question

Yes, I know none of the advice offered here qualifies as medical advice. I know if I have questions I should just ask my doc. I know if I really wanna know I should just suck it up and pee on a stick. I know all that. I lurk/post often enough to hear everyone else get ragged on enough to know the standard spiel. Nonetheless, I'm asking.

If I'm on the pill, but the first time I've had sex in months is 3-4 days before my period, and then I miss that period, is it possible that I'm pregnant? Or would it be too soon and I'd have to miss the next one?

Re: Sex/BC Question

  • It's possible. Chug some OJ and get a stick to pee on. (not a doctor)
In Response to Re:Sex/BC Question: This. We have no way of knowing this. Heck you can get pregnant while ON your period. So, seriously, call your doctor and ask or POAS. Most doctors offices will have a nurse return a call for questions like this without charging you anything.
    Posted by StageManager14
Definitely this.

And the nurse will most likely tell you to take a pregnancy test.

  • I'm a big fan of my pills, but they aren't clockwork. Sometimes I can start my period two to three days after it's technically supposed to (I don't complain, I think they're freebies!).

However, just pee on a stick instead of letting it overshadow you the entire day/week/month/whatever. Sometimes it's just a maintenance feature of owning a uterus in my mind. Knowing the answer sooner is better than later, no matter what decision you make should there be a plus sign. Vitamins to take, shots to get, decisions to make, etc. All can't wai on wishing the situation away, unfortunately.

  • It's probably not worth calling your doctor - just take a pregnancy test if you're that worried about it. On a side note, if you've been on birth control long enough, it's possible that your period has stopped entirely. Mine did (resulting in me taking multiple pregnancy tests before I realized I just didn't get my period any more).

  • I would think reading this thread is more stressful and time consuming then just POAS.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests. Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Like Stage, I always seemed to have a stash of PT's around. Unlike her I would by the new pack if I was either out or the PT was expirenced AND I thought I need to test for a reason.

  • It's possible that you are pregnant. The only way to know is to take a pregnancy test, and if it's positive then call your doctor.

And really? If you are asking this question, then you need to educate yourself on how your body works ASAP. Learn about how ovulation works. Learn about how your pill works to stop ovulation, and learn what is likely to happen if you miss a pill, take it at the wrong time, or whatever.

You SHOULDN'T ovulate while on the pill, but anything can happen. I have plenty of friends who have become pregnant while on the pill. Personally, I was on the pill for ten years without getting pregnant, but I could have been on a different brand or was more diligent in taking it at the same time every day. Or maybe I was lucky. Who knows.

Truth. I keep a 3pk of PTs in the bottom bathroom drawer, next to the cotton balls and qtips. When I use the last one or the expiration date hits, I go buy another 3pk. They're just handy to have for days like these, no stress, no waiting, no embarrassing "OMG the check out guy KNOWS I might be pregnant" crazy anxiety. Just grab one, per, and wait 3 minutes to find out there's nothing to worry about. Posted by StageManager14
Stage, do we share the same bathroom or something? That's my set up exactly.

  • I'm just going to pipe in here and say learn a little about the menstrual cycle. You don't ovulate three days before your period is due.

Well... no not exactly. We DO have baby chickens in a cage on the floor of the walk in closet. The cats like to sit and stare at them from the bathroom proper.

Yeah, but if she's on the pill she shouldn't be ovulating at all. If she was on day 24-25 of her cycle and missed a dose, took her pill at the wrong time, or was taking some kind of medication that had a negative interaction with her BCP, then she could have ovulated. It's unlikely, but possible.

  • As long as you're having sex there's always a possibility you could be pregnant, whatever form of BC you're using. Of course it's less likely at some times than others but never a guarantee. POAS.

  • Thanks. Didn't help at all, because you told me exactly what I already knew, but basically just gave me the kick in the rear to go POAS.

    BTW:
Yes, I know how BC works. However, I'm on a whole bunch of meds (not antibiotics, so theoretically they shouldn't mess with my pill, but you never know), so I always freak a little when my clockwork is off.

I used to have a stash of tests under my sink. In fact, they were next to my Q-tips too. But they expired and I threw them out.

And FWIW, I take my pill at the same time every day and haven't missed a dose.

    Thanks guys!
