Culinary Brides/ChefWorld/Cook World

Hey there. Sorry to jump in with no introduction, I'm usually observing the boards every now and then but not really giving input. I searched The Knot for advice about this scam/direct marketing/who knows thing called "Chef World" and found some recent posts but mostly older stuff so I figured I'd start one that's happening NOW.

I got a call the other night from someone named Maria who told me I was drawn to win prizes (same as what everyone else was told it looks like) and I asked where they got my information from, she said it could be anywhere, a bridal expo (haven't been to one), theknot.com, etc. Didn't mention David's Bridal but I've seen that pretty much everywhere that I've been trying to find information about this and later on I asked the presenter, saying I haven't been to a bridal show and he said if I've visited David's then that's where they got the information from.

We went and I figured it would be silly and we'd just get the rings and leave but as those of you who have seen it know, they make very compelling arguments. My fiance and I cook chicken all the time and we're always trying to figure out why it'll be perfect one time and then chewy the next...? Who knows. So of course when the guy passed around the chicken and veggies we were amazed. I'm not going to lie, it was DELICIOUS, and took no time at all. The cleanup process was really quick too which was appealing.

So there we were with 3 other couples and they went through the china, knives, pans, etc. I can't remember the exact prices he told us but it was a 17 piece set for $1699 or something... Maybe that's wrong maybe it was $2200. Anyway we were really hesitant, we asked them about the interest stuff, etc etc. It's getting later and later and the guy was eventually like look I'll give it to you guys, the 8 piece set (4 pots, lids makes it 8) for $300 off the price we said, so $1099. We were still like talking about it for a while and he said $1000 even no tax (we were planning to pay in full if we purchased). My fiance at that point was like okay let's do it. NOTE: We are very doubtful, cautious people. So of course my stomach was/is in knots the whole time and I was stalling as much as possible because I just feel like it's something we never would have done.

IF THESE ARE WHAT THEY APPEAR TO BE, I think it's a great deal. There's no questioning that I don't think cookware is really safe all the time (their demonstrations aren't hard to believe) but I just don't know if this is seriously the perfect alternative. IF it is, then I think it's worth the money - not just for ease of use, more for health reasons. And no I'm not a health freak, I'm just conscious about what goes into my body and regretful that it's so hard to try to be healthy with what the grocery stores present as options to someone who doesn't have unlimited financial resources... Anyway.

I came home with a receipt and the business address for "ChefWorld" located in Monroe, NY, the pans say "Cook World" on them and "Culinary Brides" was who called me. Our guy (Jim) said they had a great BBB rating and some kind of platinum thing? I looked it up and they have an F. :( So then I started freaking out of course, going crazy looking for more information. I saw on the Facebook page for ChefWorld Inc that the people who have problems seem to get responses right away from ChefWorld and then they never come back to follow up. I guess in my experience that's a good thing...? I messaged a few people who posted on there to ask how they feel about the purchase. Then I see really mixed reviews everywhere else...

ASIDE from the free stuff, I understand there are catches with that and everything else, I just want to know if these pans are the real deal. If they are, I don't care paying what might seem like a crazy amount for them because the different features even the small 10 set has will really help us out (easy to clean is perfect because the house we're buying doesn't have a working dishwasher, the installed oven there is tiny so if we didn't have to use it that would be great, they're space-efficient, etc) - if they suck, I really hope we can find out soon and try to get out of this before this "3 day period" ends.

Hopefully this is helpful to anyone just coming to try and make sense of this promotional thing. My fiance and I have NEVER done this before and I doubt we ever will simply because we came at 8:30 and left at 11:10 because we both had such a hard time deciding whether or not it was a good idea heh. Kind of torturous, not sure I'd want to do it again. But if we go through with it and these work I'm definitely going to be saying good things about them for years to come.

Tips? Thoughts? Other experiences with this company or any of its mysterious alter-egos?

Sorry you got swindled. I got calls for this after going to a bridal expo and after multiple calls I basically told them to eff off. We were told to go sit through an hour live infomercial than we'd get a free honeymoon... right. If that's not a load of sh!t than I don't know what is.

[QUOTE]In Response to Culinary Brides/ChefWorld/Cook World : Your cooking doesn't suck because of the pans you're using.  New pans won't make you a good chef. I really don't understand how anyone can fall for these things yet amazingly enough people like you post about them all the time.  Were you born yesterday?

You're so kind, thanks for sharing! Next time I wonder why something isn't flawless in the kitchen I'll make sure I consult you since you obviously know what you're doing between catering for the President and posting on the knot.

There were things I liked and things I didn't like. We're cancelling the order (nothing to do with that heartfelt response up there) and will take our chances with more normally priced and readily available items. Thanks for not being a total dovchebag, by the way. :)

Having Barack in your top 10 on Myspace isn't something to be proud of, imo.

I don't know about ALL that.

Man, not even the knot is exempt from that one "General Discussion" or in this case "Chit Chat" troll. Perhaps I was wrong, maybe you don't cook. If you talked to the President I think you'd have a better chance of gaining some sort of self importance in reality rather than desperately clamboring for it on "the knot" - I could be wrong, I mean I can't even cook and all that. A failure of a housewife to be. You could give classes, I'll use our refund to pay for your "Becoming a Classy Individual for Dummies" book.
  • CN- OP went to a live infomercial, got sucked in and spent a ton of money on pots and pans thinking her cooking would be better, but now she's reading that the company has terrible ratings. She wants to know if she should cancel.

This is from memory from early this morning. If I got something wrong then my bad.

  • At least you can cook.

  • Hahahahaha the ease of cooking wasn't the main reason why we thought they were quite appealing. It was a health related choice. The awesome, moist, chicken made through a completely waterless method was a plus, yes, but so were the veggies they made, the way the pots clean, and how they store. I make fantastic food. I wasn't planning on relying on pots to make me a good cook. It was more like "that's super fast, easy to clean, quick storing, etc." People pay much more for knife sets, pot sets, whatever. Do you piss and moan when someone registers for $5,000 worth of cookware for their wedding? NOOOOPE. Why? Simply because it's from a store and they're not getting a live demonstration? Okay.

Quick note: I'm not offended or sitting here surrounded by my stuffed animals crying because someone chooses to tease me and pick their way through a discussion board. I'm not 10, while I might have questioned my choice in this first encounter with a live infomercial, I understand how the internet works and my insults/retorts are simply playing along. I don't think you're an evil creature. I do plenty of my own trolling, just not on sites like the knot because I generally thought of this as a place to look for USEFUL advice, from HELPFUL people. I got a jokester. Who cares, no skin off my back.

Anyway. No hard feelings. Obama too.
  • I know this thread got way off the topic of cooking but I just wanted to throw it out there...

If you know how to season a pan and keep it seasoned you can use a regular (not non-stick) pan with very little oil. I'm not sure what health part you were talking about whether its the non-stick coating being unhealthy or excessive oil.

Also, chicken will always be moist unless its over cooked. Doing a cooking demonstration where you are selling the cookware top priority is not over cooking the food. It has nothing to do with the pan.

If you want to drop a grand on a set of pots I would def recommend all-clad. Good cookware can make all the difference in food.

I think we're going to go with stainless steel. If the guy was useful for anything, at least he made some good points about normal cookware. Teflon/nonstick is dangerous if you're cooking anything over a certain temperature, those big black with white speckle painted pots have paint that will chip off, cast iron has "pores" that retain whatever you've been cooking including bacteria, etc etc etc. The only bad thing about stainless steel is that it starts looking dirty after a while. Whatever. We don't care.

It just seemed healthy to us because it was waterless or whatever they call it? Didn't take a lot of oils I guess. I'm no expert, I didn't do as much time in the kitchen with my mom and grandmother as I should have but I'll definitely look into the best way to season and oil our stuff to keep it from getting too unhealthy.

The way they first described it was as a tool that brings you an oven on the stove because it cooks evenly. I read online that it's just a glorified pressure cooker. I guess that made most sense to me.
  • hi there, i have also been swindled by this company and i DO NOT recommend purchasing from this company. i have an unbelievably amount of trouble through this company and its credit financiers and i have not even received my product. not only are they convinced that it was sent to me but they didn't even require a signature upon delivery! on a $800 product i don't care how often its shipped, it should require a signature!
