Hope Chest

My FI bought me one from an older lady and it was extremely scratched up and one of the decorative peices was broken. My FI and my dad sanded it down and refinsihed it and constructed a new peice that matched the others. It looks wonderful now. I know its just a large cedar chest, but it is very special to me and it is something that we can pass down to our daughters should we be blessed with children.
I was just wondering if any of ya'll have one?

Re: Hope Chest

  • I don't have one but I would have liked one. I like the idea of them.

  • It sounds really nice.  I'm not sure that I like what it symbolizes in the traditional sense, but as a piece of furniture it soudns really beautiful.  And if you pass it down in your family it can symbolize whatever you want it to symbolize.

  • I have my mother's. It was made by my grandfather. It is cedar and beautiful. Mine is 62 years old this summer.
  • I have one and I love it! My mother gave it to me when I bought my first house. I believe my grandfather made it for my grandmother as an engagement gift. SO special to me.

  • My FI suprised me with it before a couple months before we got engaged. It was a great project for him and my dad because they got to spend some time together working on it and everything. My is quite a bit larger than what I expected it to be, but I love it!
  • I feel so out of the loop.. what is a hope chest?
  • I have one. My mom and I have collected items through the years that I could possibly use for my wedding. If we saw nice articles in magazines or even little trinkets. It was nice to go through it together.

It's a wooden trunk, usually made out of cedar.

Allegedly it got it's name because young women would put stuff in there... stuff they might need for their own home one day in hopes they would need it. Ya know, a hope chest.

The first time I had heard of one was in the first Back to the Future movie when Marty's mother mentions she put his pants "over there, on my hope chest."

  • One of my grandmothers gave me a Lane cedar chest that I LOVE, as a wedding gift. It's not really a 'hope' chest as we're just using it now for storage. However, we do plan to use it to keep mementos and keepsakes eventually.

  • I almost had my grandmother's decades old cedar chest to use as a hope chest... but when my dad and his wife got a divorce.... he gave it to my little sister as a bribe. Yours sounds beautiful!

Ah, I see. I know I heard it on Back to the Future (it's my favorite movie!), but I had no idea what she was talking about, ha! Thanks for clearing things up for me!
  • Aww crystal, that is such a sweet story!!! My parents gave me one after I graduated from college and moved into my first apartment. Right now I am keeping my wedding planning things in it!
  • My mom has had one FOREVER, and her brother is building me one from old pieces of furniture that belonged to various people in my family, and he'll bring it to me for my wedding gift. He made one for my cousin a few years ago and it was gorgeous.... He writes a little story about where the wood came from, who the pieces belonged to, etc. Definitely looking forward to getting mine!

  • Hopefully I will be getting my great grandmother's. She got it as a wedding present when she got married in 1924. It was always said that the first great grandchild that gets engaged gets the chest. I'm the 3rd oldest and first engaged. However, my older cousin and I are at war over it because she's older and on the verge of getting engaged . My great grandmother was the one that I spend everyday with until she passed away in 98'. It stinks because I always loved it and she never mentioned it in her will.
