Tipping for trials

I am going for my trial makeup and hair today and I was just wondering how much I should tip?  Two different ladies are doing my hair and make-up.  Thanks!!

Re: Tipping for trials

  • Do the regular 15-20% of the service to each.  A trial is no different than the real thing it's just as much work.
  • Oh my gosh.  This thread made me realize that I did not tip my hairstylist at all.  Not for my trial, and not for my day of hair.  It never even crossed my mind.  I feel terrible now.

  • I guess I should have mentioned that the trial and day of are all included in my venue price as their is a salon at the resort where we are getting married.  That would have helped before!  I don't believe their prices are on their website for these services..

  • Maybe go with what you tip your usual stylist then.

  • I would say probably $20 each then to be on the safe side.  Make sure to take lots of pictures so they remember what it looked like.  It might eliminate some stress the day of.  Also, wearing white is probably a good idea.  It will give you a better idea of how the makeup will look with the dress.

  • I would just go with the regular 15-20% rule. Like PPs said, it's the same as the real thing. From my experience working as an esthetician in a salon/spa I've seen that the stylist takes out time in their book for your appointment like they would for any appointment, sometimes more time, and so they should be compensated the same as if you were going to get your color done.
If they don't give you pricing because it's included in the venue price ask the receptionist how much it typically would be if it wasn't included in the venue price. Or you can always ask the receptionist how much is typical to tip the stylist for this service. They should be pretty honest with you.
Good luck with your trial, I hope you love it!
  • Oh Nilla, you just reminded me! Nillawafer has a great point! If you have a swatch of the color of your dress, if it's not white, take that with you. Your makeup can change drastically depending on the color of your dress and how it affects the way your skin looks. Your makeup artist will appreciate it if you give her an idea of what the color is.

  • Thanks for the great advice ladies!  I am wearing white to the fitting although, my dress is more creamy than it is white, but I don't have a swatch.  I never thought of that!  Although, my veil matches, so I will have that with me!  Thanks again ladies..that was great help!  And with the money too!

I just tipped 20% off the charge for the trials. If they don't have the prices listed on their website, just come prepared to pay the extra 20% off of whatever they charge you depending on how well of a job they did.
