Winter's Bone vs. The Hunger Games

Hopefully some of you have read the Hunger Games and seen Winter's Bone, which was Jennifer Lawrence's big debut as a lead. Now she will be portraying Katniss in The Hunger Games. Has anyone else noticed the striking similarities between Winter's Bone and The Hunger Games? 17 year old girl takes care of her family, while her father is dead, mother is crazy/depressed. In both stories the girl is fearless and fights for her family and is willing to basically sacrifice her life for her family. I read The Hunger Games a few months ago and just watched Winter's Bone yesterday because I wanted to assess Jennifer Lawrence's acting skills. I think she will make the perfect Katniss, but was very suprised at the parallels in the two stories. Any thoughts?

Never saw Winter's Bone but I'm definitly interested.  I am looking forward to seeing the Hunger Games though.

You should read Winter's Bone. It's a good book.

Ordered it on Kindle just now - I'm hooked on Hunger Games enough to read anything peripheral to it

They are vastly different stories, but I just thought the parallels of an actress playing such similar roles was very interesting. It almost seems like she got type cast even though I wouldn't be complaining if I were her. When I was watching Winter's Bone, I couldn't stop thinking, "this is why they picked her to play Katniss."

I'll have to check  Winter's Bone out, thanks!  It would be interesting to compare her acting in both.

I usually see a lot of debates on the net comparing Battle Royale to The Hunger Games.  I saw Battle Royale shortly after it was first released and while the plots are similar, the messages and social commentary behind both are completely different.  That said, I realize that most people watching/reading the book without any introduction to Japanese culture and/or social issues at the time of its release might automatically assume THG must have been heavily influenced by it.  As a fan of both, there's too many differences for me to feel like THG is just a rip off of BR.

I'm so mad they're delaying the release of THG in Japan until some unannounced time this year.  I kind of hope someone manages to get a sneak cam of it and upload so I don't have the wait another 3-6 months for it to be released here.

I haven't seen Battle Royale, so I will have to look into that too! I am sure someone will get a pretty good cam of it haha, they always do!

Ok so I just IMBD'd it and it does seem really similar, except for some reason looks a lot creepier haha! I am not sure I could make it through that one. I am looking at the pics and they are really creeping me out ha!
