Hyphenating DD last name after wedding?

I actually have never heard of hyphenating your child's name. I must live under a rock. My ex husband sees the kids every week, so I know that their names would stay the same, anyways. My 10 year old has asked me if we would still be related when my name changes. It kinda breaks my heart that they think that, but I know that they will see nothing will change, and that I will always be their mother no matter what our names are.
