How far to go?

So here's the deal: I've been engaged for a year and we are finally getting serious about wedding planning because we're looking at summer 2013 for the date. Recently my brother-in-law got a job in Germany (taking my sister and matron of honor with him). We're all really proud of him and are excited to go visit them next summer (summer 2013...). So now we need to find a venue and set a date so we can plan the family "reunion".

Enter problem: My fiance and I like the vintagey rusticy laid-back wedding feeling. I've always had my heart set on an outdoor wedding and my fiance wants the reception to be indoors (he's in food science and doesn't like the idea of possible bugs in food...). We're both from tiny towns with nothing but churchs for weddings (neither of us are religous and don't want to get married in a church) and the outdoor places are sad looking public parks with not indoor reception places. There are two places we both love that are about an hour, hour and half away in Columbus, OH. My mom LOATHES Columbus because of the crowds and traffic and she's making our cake. But my fiance's family will be flying into Port Columbus so it'd be easy for them to go from the airport, to a hotel, to the wedding. But my mom is worried about delivering the cake in Columbus traffic which makes sense. But do I give up the venue of my dreams (its not crazy expensive which is woo-hoo moment) because of the distance or fight for it?

*Note: his mom wants to pay for the whole wedding, my parents say their not comfortable with it but have yet to offer anything and my mom said that they can't afford a wedding and visiting my sister*

Re: How far to go?

  • You have several decisions to make here but what you need to remember is that this is going to be YOUR day!  You and your FI need to make the decision and not let others influence you.  Altough I can see the hassel of cake delivery, maybe your mom can find someone else to do the driving??? Don't let a small think like traffic get in the way of finding your perfect wedding venue.

Some suggestions to look at?  If you want to satisfy both indoor and outdoor feels check out the Kelton House (downtown)-you can do your ceremony outside and reception inside.  However, very small venue.  Look at the Franklin Park Conservatory, great for outdoor photos!  Tall Timbers in Reynoldsburg has an outdoor ceremony spot and indoor reception.

    Good Luck!
  • Ask your local boards if they have any advice. And as for the cake, I grew up in a town of 300 about 2 hours from the nearest big city and people somehow got cakes in.
Just saying, there will always be options. Good luck!

Is the biggest problem about how your mom doesn't like to drive in Columbus?

Drive her.  Ask someone else to drive her.  She'll be nervous for a bit, get it there, and all will be well.  Seriousy!  My mother is crazy about driving in Philadelphia (and she grew up here!!), but ever since my sister had a baby, she drives over here all the time now.  She had a reason to learn the city and it's served her well.

Go with Columbus.  It's easy for guests to fly in, lots of hotels, more wedding options, and Columbus is such a cute lil city!
  • PPs are wise, especially Joy because she is also a Phillies fan.

Congratulations! I think Columbus sounds like a fine idea. Dream venue = everyone else has to get over themselves. Not to be crabby!
