Tell me about Kindles please.

my FMIL hinted around that she was going to buy me a kindle for my birthday in a few months. I was horrified by the though of it, but then I realized that I honestly don't know that much about Kindles.

I do love reading and books (and I love the smell of old books).I usually buy books from used book stores or yard sales. However, I can only read a book once (except for a few select books that are excellently written.) I have a photographic memory and remember every detail about the book after I've read it, so  I rarely buy books "new" and when I do, I resale them to gain a bit of money back (besides, why would I want books laying around that I can't read again)

I was reading some Kindle reviews and got mixed signals.

One reviewer mentioned she bought textbook for Kindle, a few others mentioned downloading a bunch to take on a vacation. All good ideas, but the biggest thing for me is the fact that you can't resale the books after you buy them (please correct me if I'm wrong.)

After you read your book, can you some how send it over to a friend's Kindle to let them read it? Can you sell the files? Do you just delete them when you're finished? (isn't that sort of like throwing away regular books that you've only read a few times?)

Can you write notes in the margins of the kindle versions? or highlight certian passages that you really like?

I usually wait until one of my friends/relatives upgrades to a new technology and borrow it from them or try it out before buying my own, but no one I know (except a relative in Mexico City) has a Kindle.

What are the pro's and con's of getting a Kindle instead of regular books?

I'd love to hear about the Kindle too because I received one for Christmas and I have no idea how to get books on there ro read. I did download one book (but it was $6.99) but I know there is free books out there and I'd like to figure out how to get the free ones on there - any ideas on that?

kalizoomba - I'm sorry if it seems I asked too many questions in your thread. I'm trying to figure out my own too. I love it so far, but technology is just not my thing, I have a difficult time grasping it.

But with the one book I read so far - I was not able to jot down any notes of my own. And if I can send and receive books with friends/family that would be GREAT - but so far I have no idea.

Thank you in advance for any help.

Kindle doesn't have the lending feature yet - apparantly they're working on it. You can't resell the books (as far as I know).

You can make annotations and highlight passages, but if you're not going to ever read it again, what's the point?

Pros for me are portability - i can just throw it in my purse, and take it along. I also read super fast. I got my kindle at 9 am, downloaded my first book at 11, and finished it by 8 pm. I read too fast to carry multiple books around with me. E-books also tend to be cheaper. And they don't take up any space in my house either. Amazon stores them online when you delete them off your kindle, and if you want to download it again, its free.

Cons- There really aren't any for me yet.

Pizza - did you read the instruction manual? It tells you how to highlight and make notes in it. Most of the free books are the classics. You can just go into the store, and search for free books. HTH

Well I like to write notes  - not so I can read it again, but if I'm flipping through the book, I see some notes and then just re-read that passage that I thought was important. to me, the cons of a Kindle far outweigh the pros. especially the cost. Kindle books are usually anywhere from $7-10 (from what I've read) but you can't resell them. If I buy a $10 book, I can usually sell it for $5. You can't buy "used" kindle books at yardsales like I do regular books, and you can't tell your friends how awesome a book was then loan your copy to them without giving them your $200 device.

I'm really wondering what this means for libraries and librarians. I was looking to go into that field.

I have a Kindle and I have to say there are many many many great features to it.

You are correct, you cannot resell the books once you buy them. It does depend on what type of book you are reading... there are 1000s of free books for the Kindle, including some great classics. If you read new books, they are at a discounted price, so a book that may cost $25 in the bookstore is now sold for $12 and under. Many books are also under $5 - I found one for 50 cents. They vary...

you can archive every book you read... the kindle stores some on it's harddrive and if you go over that limit - it is stored for you through the Amazon website forever an you can pull it up whenever you like. I take my Kindle everywhere... and it's great to be able to have my library with me at all times. I go onto the Kindle website and search the top 100 free books of the week and download all that seem to interest me. Also, they have free games (for example, they give you a word and you see how many words you can make out of it).

    Hope that helps. Good Luck!

I don't really have any answers to your questions, but i'm kind of put off by the thought of an electronic book. I like to have an actual book in my hand- maybe I am too old fashioned?

You are not the only one!  My FI wanted to get me an E-book device for Christmas but I told him I really didnt want one.. :(

I would much rather carry around a paperback, feel the pages, see the ink on my fingers, smell the binding... ok, I'm a nerd!  I know it!  And I know that I just wouldnt get the same satisfaction from a Nook or Kindle.

    He got me a B&N giftcard instead.  <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-tongue-out.gif" border="0" alt="Tongue out" title="Tongue out" />

I'm so glad that I'm not the only one. I think if Kindles were cheaper, almost everyone I know would have one. I might take one if it were free, but I wouldn't go out and buy one. It just doesn't seem like my style.

I love mine. I have had it a year. The only problem i have had was that at night you need a light to see, the page can be dark. I also like to share books which you can not do. It is so easy bc I read so quickly to get another book. I have a tendency of forgetting the name of the book I am reading bc i don't constantly see the cover. You can look up words you are unsure if. Yu can highlight sections you like. I like it, and i was a little apprehensive too. They are pretty cheap now I would say try it out

Apelila- a B&N gift card is a great gift! You sound just like me from your post lol.

Kali- you're not the only one who's apprehensive about getting one. I'm going to ask a few of my friends about theirs- I'll let you know if anything changes but i'm starting to think that Trix might be right. Once we start using one, we probably won't be able to put it down.

I just got a Kindle for Christmas - so far it is great.  I have been wanting to read a ton of old classics... and they are largely free for Kindle.  Pretty cool!  I'm working on The Count of Monte Cristo right now :)

ebooks cost less, but as near as I can tell, you cannot share them or re-sell- which is a bummer.

I got a nook Color and I LOVE IT!!! There are free books and other books are on average about $10. You can highlight text on books and you can borrow books from other users that you know. You can also look up words you don't know.  You can also access the internet on it, it has limited games, but I heard they are developing apps for it.

I thought I would miss the satisfaction of reading a book, but honestly I haven't.  I highly recommend it and I think the Nook Color is worth the extra $$.

The pro with Kindle vs othe e readers are that you can purchase books from multiple places.  I don't know how to do it...I am wanting a Kindle myself...but I've heard you can check books out at the library via the Kindle.  That is a selling point for me because then they are free!

<div>But not all libraries have this option. I work at a library and we don't do that - of course it is in a smallish town. In larger cities they might do it more.</div>
