Name Change - 2 middle names

I thought I had figured this all out, but I think I may have been self-misinformed...

Does anyone know for CERTAIN that you can have TWO middle names on the marriage license and/or legally on driver's license/SS card/etc?

I finally decided that I wanted to keep all my names and also take my husband's to be last name so that i would have the same last name as him and our children.

So, I would be [first name] [middle name] [middle name] [husband's last name]. -- /> (ie. Samantha Mai-Lin Lee Jones.)

It seems  though that according to the San Diego County marriage reqs and The Name Equality Act of 2007 [gives specific rights to parties at the time they are applying for a California marriage license to choose and list on the marriage license the new name that each party will go by after marriage. Please refer to the
Name Equality Act.] I can't have two middle names without hyphenating them???!!!

I'm a little peeved because my middle name is already hypenated and I don't want two hypens in my middle name! I don't want to be (Samantha Mai-Lin-Lee Jones), I want TWO middle names! -- />

ANYONE KNOW OF HOW THIS WORKS???? THANK YOU!!!!

  • I know you can have two middle names on an Ontario marriage license because we just got ours last week and my name has 2 middle names (It appears that way on my DL and passport too). But since you're not in Ontario, I suggest you call your local clerks office and ask them.

  • I was Anna Middle Maiden.  I am now Anna Middle Maiden Married or Anna M.M. Married. No hyphen anywhere, 2 middle names, one last.

So I can assure you that it can indeed be done.  However, local laws do apply so i recommend calling down to your administration building and finding out for sure.
  • Ditto.   My sister has both her middle name and maiden name on her drivers license in Washington State.  I was not given a middle name at birth, so I will be taking my maiden name as my middle name also.

My sister says she regrets taking her maiden name as her middle name, she says it's just too long and I think people try to hyphinate it.  I think she's exagerating, but that's what she tells me.
  • I wish I had done this. I didn't realize it was allowed in NC and didn't put much thought to it. So, my last name is hypenated and its a PAIN IN THE ARSE.

  • You may want to take you whole name off of TK. It is a public forum, and anyone in the world can see it.
