NWR: Hot Buttered Rum

Do people still drink hot buttered rums?

Everyone in my family loves hot buttered rums, so every year I make a big batch of mix to give out as little holiday presents.

This year we're going to a holiday party and everyone is supposed to bring something alcohol related for a gift exchange, so I was going to do my mix and a bottle of rum, but FI had never had one, and thinks it sounds gross.  So now I'm not sure if this is one of those weird family things I always think is normal, or if he just doesn't know what's up.

What do you guys think?

Re: NWR: Hot Buttered Rum

  • I think hot buttered rum is kind of like eggnog in that you either love it or you hate it, and I think that if it's commonplace in your family, typically you'll love it.  If you grew up without it being commonplace, you're more likely to not be too impressed with it.  I once had a boyfriend who was so excited about the upcoming holidays because he couldn't wait to introduce me to the joys of hot buttered rum.  He was shocked when I said I didn't really care for it.
  • I made it once, for Christmas.  It was the first thing I ever made in my slow cooker.  No one really drank it.  I'd never seen anyone drinking it before.  It just looked fun to try.  I can't remember if I liked it or not.

  • I've never seen it made in a slow cooker before.  We always have a frozen mix and throw it in a mug with hot water and rum.
When I was little my dad used to make them for me without the rum, because literally every adult in our family was drinking them and I wanted to be like the grown ups.
  • Hot buttered rum is one of my favorite things about the holidays! It's like taking everything you're only supposed to have 'in moderation', and mixing it in a mug.

    Yum.
  • I've never tried it but I have a Bath and Body Works Hot Buttered Rum candle and it smells delicious!
