what time?

so i have the freedom of deciding what time to start the wedding. im just interested in some ideas or reasoning behind what time we should start.

i was thinking 2 or 3 pm. we will be serving dinner sized buffet. and i dont want to start to early, so we have time to get ready, and do pictures before guests arrive. but i dont want to start too late when it might get chillier.

the wedding is on a Sunday in October in Oregon.

help me decide.

I'd go a little later, esp since you are doing photos before the ceremony.
Like 4:30.

And I would suggest that you pick a time that is on the half-hour, not the top of the hour.
It's good luck to get married when the clock hand is going UP, not down.

Here's how you would word it:

at half after four
or
at half after three

Not "HALF PAST."  Never PAST on a wedding invitation.

if you are at one venue, i would consider a little later start time, around 4.  by not needing time to travel, your wedding will be over early, by about 8-8:30 if you start at 2 or 3.  if you like this, then go for it.  otherwise go later.

we did not think about this when we chose our start time.  we get married this saturday at 3.  our wedding will be over about 8:30 or 9.  we had already booked a B&B for the night and honeymoon for the next day, so we do not plan on going out afterwards.  this is a small thing, but i wish i had done a 4/4:30/5 start time.  oh well.  still so excited!

We had a 3 p.m. start time for our wedding.  Guests arrived at the reception around 4:30 and we ate around 5 p.m.  Our reception ended at midnight.  Of course, no one was required to stay that late; that's just how late people ended up staying and dancing.  It was a blast!

We are starting our ceremony at 2 and reception will start around 3.  We are doing a fajita buffet, though not a meal time people can come up when they wish to eat.  It's not like it's a sit down dinner.  Our reception will be over by 8 which works for us because we have to wake up at 5 am the next day to drive to Fort Worth to catch a plane to Maui. 

Just go with what works best for you.

great tips, these are exactly the ideas i was looking for. our reception is in the same location as the ceremony, our home, possibly the same room is weather isnt good. so no additional travel time.

and if its good luck for the hands to face up, why is 430 a good idea, the minnute hand would be facing down.... maybe i read that wrong.

im thinking 330 or 4 is a good idea though more time in the morning to get ready and wont be over too soon in the day. we are having an after party at the same location, basically, just bringing out the booze and moving tables, bringing in couches after many of the guests leave. i dont want the after party to last too late though because my brother and his 6 kids are staying at our home the night of the wedding and we will either go out for breakfast the next morning or have breakfast at home, depending on money.

I live in Oregon, also, and I'm sure that you've thought of this, but remember that in October it's dark by 5PM. If you're wanting pictures after the ceremony or during the reception/dinner, the lighting will not be nearly as good once it's dark, which means the pictures will probably not turn out as well. You definitely want to think about the weather, too, since it will more than likely be cold and rainy, and possibly freezing. You want to make sure it's early enough that people can get home safely, and that if you guys are leaving right away for a honeymoon you can leave safely as well. My wedding started at 6PM, but I got married in June.
