Slippers in Public?

I had to return some stuff to Target and figured I'd get it out of the way tonight so I didn't have to go in the morning, only to get out of my car in the parking lot and realize I was still wearing my slippers.  I had a brief debate with myself, then got back in the car and went home to put on real shoes.  I know my dad and brother are all about slippers in public and tend to treat their slippers as casual shoes (they also have matching slippers, so when we're all together I fully support it TWINSIES!), FI doesn't really wear slippers and doesn't care either way, my mom is fully against slippers in public, and while I try not to do it, I don't mind when other people do (quick trips to the store, going to casual family functions).  What do you guys think?  Are slippers in public a huge no-no?

I think it depends what kind of slippers they are and where you are going. I have some ballet flat style slippers that are like a knit sweater like material, and I wear them out if I'm going to the gas station or something. I would wear them to Target, but then again I frequently go to Target looking like I just rolled out of bed. I'm a big fan of piling my hair on top of my head and just keeping my sunglasses on. And I would wear them to Starbucks, because I feel like almost anything is acceptable before I've had coffee, they're lucky if I put on my pants. :)

I have a pair of gray, cable-knit slippers with hard bottoms.  When worn with my comfy, flowy sweatpants or jeans they look like real shoes due to the popularity of Uggs.  I'll admit that I've worn them to the grocery store, which is in the first floor of my apartment building, but I'd never wear them anywhere else.  Slippers aren't shoes.
  • I do not wear slippers in public. I also can't stand when people wear pajama pants in public.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I have a pair of sketchers that could look like slippers (cable knit, hard bottom like an athletic shoe, fuzzy inside).  I only wear them to take the dog out, so I could see if people think they are slippers.

I'm not a fan, however if I found myself in them and already at the store I would not waste the tank of gas to go home to get "real shoes".  Work I would.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I ran to the ice cream shop a few weeks ago and realized as we were paying and leaving that I wearing my moccasin like slippers. I was mortified!!!
  • I've definitely worn houseshoes to the grocery and places like Target on purpose because I couldn't be bothered to change when I'm at home and realize I need something. I usually pile my hair on top of my head, wear pyjama pants, throw on a hoodie, slip on slippers and then head to the store. I'd never waste the gas to go home upon realizing I was wearing something like the wrong shoes -- the only way you'd get me to go home is if I realized that you could totally see my ass hanging out or something.

  • I have worn slippers out and about before if I'm making a quick trip to Target, the grocery store, or the gas station.  I wouldn't wear them if I were going somewhere for an extended period of time or somewhere "nicer", like a big shopping trip at the mall, a restaurant, or a movie.  I also don't have a problem wearing yoga/exercise pants in public, if I am just running somewhere quick after the gym and I don't want to change.  I might wear PJ pants if I had to get a coffee or something at the gas station down the road, but that is pretty much the only place.
  • I did this a lot in high school and now I look back and I am mortified. I also wore pajama pants a few times to class in college. *shudder* Now I HATE seeing either in public. I would also have turned around and gone back home.
  • I live less than a mile from Target, so it wasn't a big deal, to me, to turn around and go home.  I have slipper boots, one pair is dark brown knit with half inch thick, hard soles, and I probably would wear those if I were just running to the gas station or something really quickly.  I have another pair that is silver furry stuff with sequins, standard soft-ish soles, and huge puffy balls hanging from the top.  Those stay in the house, no exceptions.

Unfortunately I was wearing the silver pair last night.

My brother keeps telling me that "dad slippers" are the current trend in men's footwear, and I love how wrong he is.
  • I have a really comfortable and soft pair of slippers with hard bottoms on them but the only place I wear them outside the house is the backyard when I take the dog out. Sorry, but I just can't get on board with slippers or sleepwear out in public. I would've done the same as you--turned around and went back home to change into shoes. I will go out in black yoga pants, tennis shoes, and a sweatshirt when I want to be comfortable, but that's about it.

  • I bought (from the regular shoe section) what I thought were black fabric ballet flats. I was super excited that they had warm fleece insides since I'm always cold at work. Maybe 3 or 4 months later when I kicked them off I realized they had slipper soles and duh that's why they are fuzzy inside. I still wear them, if I couldn't tell, no one else can. I'd buy them again too since they aren't clacky and I feel like a jerk wearing noisey shoes in a library.

My fuzzy bear claw slippers don't see the outside of my apartment. The UPS man and our cable guy have made fun of them.

I'll wear fleece sweatpants to walk the dog, Starbucks or the convienance store. I'll wear gym clothes to run errands before/after the gym, if the grocery checkout lady or bank teller want to judge me that's ok. I'm not going to take an extra 20 minutes out of my day to change and go back out.

  • No. I have two pairs of slippers...one is an open back pair with dog heads on front, the other are the sweater boots some PP's have described. I would never set foot outside my house in either one. Then again, I don't go anywhere without makeup, either, so I might just be weird.

FI has a moccasin pair he wears to walk the dog before bed.

  • depending where you are...and what kind of slippers!  If you are going to the store and they can pass for shoes, I say go for it (hard bottom, etc).  I have a pair of loafers and will where them in public if its a quick trip
