does anyone know if you need the marriage license or certificate for the dmv?

I would look on your state's DMV website, since it varies by state. But they did ask for mine.

It varies from state-to-state.   I need my SS card with the new name and the license.

In Florida, I needed my new social security card or a letter stating name change from the social security local office along with my marriage license.

In Michigan I had to change my SS Card first and then take my new card and my marriage license into the Secretary of State office to get my new license.

You will probably need your SS card and your marriage cert. I just got used to bringing these with me everywhere when I was changing my name.

This. In MI, I needed to change my name with SSA first and also bring my marriage certificate.

Like PPs said, it varies by state.  I did need my certified marriage cert, and just had to wait 48 hours after changing my name with SS (didn't need the new card).

The DMV is crazy now! Down here in Florida you need 3 different forms of identification. I would bring it.. Better to be safe than sorry!
