NWR: So mad I'm shaking...

So I know most of you couldn't care less but I feel like I need to vent or I'm going to beat the crap out of my dog (not literally).

She is not allowed on any furniture. Period. Every so often I'll let her on the couch but she has never been on the bed. She has 2 beds, a blanket and pillow. She had been getting into things and chewing while we were at work (bathroom garbage, books, DVDs) and now we lock her in the bedroom during the day. We were worried she would sneak up on the bed so I put long sheets of foil along the perimeter of the bed to keep her off. Works great.

Friday afternoon I came home to find that I forgot to put the foil down and she is quite comfortable - her sleep number is a 55. I yell and push her off and go eat lunch. I get up and she's on the freaking bed again!! B*tch!!!

So today I'm home sick from work and I get out of bed to lay on the couch for a while. Only like an hour later I go into the bedroom and this hore is on the effing bed. But not only is she on the bed, she had horked all over it and was trying to clean it up before I found it. I'm flipping out and yelling at her and she goes to her crate before I even tell her to.

Down comforter goes to the cleaners and the sheets are in the washer. A tiny bit had soaked through to the mattress itself, which angers me the most because we JUST bought this sleep number a few months ago. I've been bugging FI to go with me to get a mattress protector but of course, we haven't gone yet - totally my fault. I was able to unzip the bed and clean it from both sides and it's totally fine, but I am not. I'm irate.

Edna will be in her crate until her father gets home. And I will take one extra pain killer and hope to calm down. Thank you for listening to me ramble. I kind of feel better and I hope the image of me flipping out while a gigantic dog lounges comfortably on my bed made you laugh internally. :)

  • I am so so sorry about your bed but I just snorted when I read her sleep number is a 55!

  • Your dog is very cute!  It took me forever to figure out that your picture was of an upside down bulldog type dog. . . at first I thought it was a rabbit with something going on with its poor head!

I have a bad feeling this is going to be a tug of war for you, as long as the dog is alive ;-)

FI and I want to get dogs when we have a house. . . 2 german shephards, perhaps.  FI loves, loves LOVES to wrestle and lay on all furniture with dogs. .. couches, chaise lounges, beds, etc.

I love dogs, but I don't think I want them on the furniture all the time, especially not the bed.  FI says then it's not fair to allow the cat on the furniture or bed. . . I thikn this may be one of our first fights after we marry!

    Good luck!

</div><div>Haha, yes, that's my big-headed American Bulldog upside down. :)</div><div>
</div><div>I love this dog to pieces but she was FI's idea and I made it clear that an animal would never be on my furniture. Anything that does not use toilet paper or wear underwear is NOT allowed in my bed. And part of the reason why I don't like cats is because you can't control them...like at all. LOL</div><div>
</div><div>Yeah, stage, I know - she didn't get into things often and it was more often in the summer when she couldn't be outside much since we had such a hot summer. We would try to walk her super early in the morning and late at night but even then it was too hot sometimes. She gets walked twice a day and goes to the dog park or FI's aunt's (with 4 dogs, any number of foster dogs and a fenced yard) like 4 times a week now. I think the recent fascination with the bed is our smell in it. We gave her an old pillow of ours and she LOVES it. But she's had it a while now so I think our stink has worn out. We give her dirty t-shirt to sleep with and she loves those too. She's pretty well trained, but we thought about going back to training classes just to stimulate her stupid brain. She loved training classes...</div>

    Okay.

I legit thought it was a cat inside some pantyhose...

Pretend it's a cat's head that is face up.  The upside down bulldog's mouth are the cat's smushed ears.  The eyes are normal.  The perfect vertical wrinkle leads to the cat's "nose" and the perfect horiztonal wrinkle is the cat's "mouth."  The part on the left (that is clearly an upside down bulldog's ear) was a cat's arm in my head.

I like to see things that aren't there, apparently.

Yeah, this. All three of our dogs sleep in bed with us. They're closed out of the master bedroom during the day because our Corgi puppy, Freya, kept stealing things off of the nightstands and dragging them around the house, but otherwise, they have free reign. They play with each other a lot, and that definitely cuts down on the destruction.

For comparison, this is her face when she knows she's done wrong..but I'm still laughing at her being a cat in pantyhose. Hahahahaa.

ETA: I saw your explaination Joy..I think I maybe see it, but it's still super funny.
  • Sorry you're having trouble.

I'm a little annoyed at the cat I'm cat sitting. He normally does not eat canned food, but my cat does. He has been eating some of my cat's canned food, which I don't mind at all. However, since he has been doing that, he is also throwing up. I assume he's just not used to it. It's frustrating b/c I really can't keep him out of it. Thankfully,my cat usually eats his whole portion when I feed him so I'm not dealing with it every single day.

I don't have dogs, but 2 cats.  Why can't they throw up on the tile or the wood floor?  Always on the carpet, the bed, my coat, a suede boot...  Something that itsn't easy to clean.  Never fails.

Sorry you're not feeling well, naughty animals don't help!

  • That sucks Addie. Cleaning puke is probably one of the grossest things ever. And especially since it's not even your cat...I don't know why but that would make it worse for me.

She hates the crate. When she was a puppy she was crated and if/when we put something in there with her (a pad, blanket, toy, water dish, anything) she'd destroy it. She's also torn both her ACLs and had surgeries on both her back legs and they get really stiff. We have the biggest crate we could find (bigger ones are taller but not longer) and she can't stretch out all the way in a crate so her legs are SUPER stiff if she's in a crate all day. In the bedroom she can have her bed, a toy to chew on, a window and a bowl of water. In her crate she gets none of these things. She seems to enjoy it in the bedroom - sometimes when we get home and let her out, she stays there anyway and the only problems we have ever had with her in there were today and Friday.
  • Bathroom may be our best bet. We have a one bedroom apartment so no office. FI wants to crate her after this. I just worry about her poor legs so much.

I loved the sleep number comment!

I can't really help other than my dog has had surgery on 1 leg and she gets really stiff she stretches A LOT but she loves her crate!  I was really worried after everything (once she was recovered) that having her stay in the crate all day would be bad for her.  Our vet said she was fine to be crated and recommended fish based foods (she is still a puppy - only 2 but later said we would need to put her on some meds to help with the stiffness).  I'm sure you have talked to your vet but just thought I would throw that out there!

    Hope you feel better!
  • I have to agree with Stage that it sounds like she is bored/frustrated. Have you tried giving her marrow bones or, better yet, "busy buddies" which are essentially mind puzzles for dogs? They dispense treats (or kibble) as the dogs figure out how to work them. There are some pretty indestructible ones out there...

Your post made me laugh.  We don't allow our beagle on the bed but he sleeps on our leather couches.  Luckily our bed is so high that he can't jump up.  Your dog is going to be confused if you let him do it some times and not others.  You should make a rule and stick to it.  I know, easier said than done.
  • Thanks Stumpie - she's on joint supplements and our surgeon said it's not mandatory but it would be good for her to stretch.

Ziggy - we've tried a lot of different bones for her to chew on and she likes to try to swallow them so she only gets them when we're home. She does have a rope that she likes to chew on when we're not home. She has one toy that's bottom heavy with a hole in the top that you fill with food (or treats). She has to punch it around to get the food out. She had it for a long time until the downstairs neighbor complained about the noise. We'll have to go to the store and see what else there is that isn't so loud. We have to be SUPER careful about her toys because she can chew through damn near everything.

MrsG - she's never been allowed on the bed. As far as I know, Friday is the first time she's ever been on our bed at all. And when I said I sometimes let her on the couch, I mean like 4-5 times in like 3 1/2 years we've had her. And she never gets to get on there if she "asks". The last time she was on the couch was probably months ago.

She hates when we come home and leave again, but I'm going to start coming home during my lunch breaks and walking her.

Thanks everyone for your advice and ideas! And I'm glad my post made people laugh - I think it's funny when people are SO mad so I'm glad my irrational anger was funny for others. :)
  • Our bathroom is quite large, and we lock our dachshund in there when we're gone. She cries a lot when we're gone, and the building started to complain. FI suggested we put her in the bedroom which is farther from the front door. I firmly said no.

    He did it anyway.

Our dog ripped up all he carpet by the door in the bedroom while he was gone.

All I can say is: stoopid humanz.

  • Yeah if you don't want to crate her, I would keep her in a room where she can't destory anything. We put baby gates up and keep our pup in the kitchen when we are gone with her bed, water, blanket, etc., but there is nothing else she can get to. We make sure anything on the counters are pushed way to the back so she can't reach. She has never destroyed anything while we are gone.

Have you tried leaving her with a Kong or two? I know you said she swallows bones, and I definitely wouldn't leave her with those unsupervised but Kongs are virtually indestructible and they even have extra strong ones for strong chewers. We fill hers with her kibble, some cheese (which she loves) and freeze them so it takes her longer to work through and keeps her occupied during the day. Not only does she love them, but it made her separation anxiety issues disappear since she only gets the Kongs when we leave and she looks forward to it.

Hi Bear! I agree with PPs - she sounds like she is bored or not getting enough exercise/stimulation. If she can't be left with bones have you tried a Kong? If she's a chewer, Kong makes a super heavy duty black one that can withstand most dogs. With my dog for long-term entertainment value I put peanut butter in the night before and freeze it overnight - she will literally spend hours occupied with it! And I think training every day will definitely help as well - classes can be really expensive so if you, your FI and she have the basics of training down there are some great training books out there that go step by step through learning new tricks!

I would REALLY not do the crate if she hates it - as PPs have said, bathroom might be the best bet. My friend's dog tore out several claws trying to dig out of a crate when she first got him, crates can do some big damage!

Haha Summer - good tips! I think we were on the same train of thought at the same time!

Also just a PSA re: bones - I know lots of people give their dogs real bones with absolutely no problems, but I know someone with a sheltie who got a bone shard stuck in his throat, so possibly think about antlers instead of bones - they are super hard so they last a good long time too so they're good on the wallet! :)
  • If you want to keep her in the bedroom so she can look out the window (which I completely understand because my pup can spend hours sitting in front of the window) have you considered a scat mat for the bed?  You can put it on furniture you don't want the dog to go on and if they do try it emits a shock.  My parents put them on the couches to keep their dog off.  I've accidently sat on it and the shock isn't painful, but it definitely makes you not want to sit there.  My parents have had it for a few years and it's to the point where they don't even need to turn it on and they have "dummy" scat mats on other pieces of the furniture and the dog has no idea they are fake and that the real one is turned off.
