Dancing lessons

My FI insists on taking dance lessons for our first dance. I'm all for it but am wondering how far in advance we should get started?
Did any of you take dance lessons for your first dance?

We're planning to take lessons.  We're going to wait until a few months before, probably.  I'm afraid we'd forget if we learned now!

Def doing dance lessons don't quite know what style we want something different to kinda shock our guest.

We plan on taking lessons a few months before the wedding, I agree with the bride above about forgetting what we learned.

Muscle memory is a powerful beast.  I find that I'll retain the basic steps pretty well without frequent practice, but choreography is much easier to lose.  (I used to actually run footwork while sitting in class by taking tiny steps in place.)  It depends on how fancy you want to get with the choreography: you'll need enough time to get the basics, but don't want to start so early that you'll be rusty.

At the beginner level for a dancer, the return on practice is tremendous.  Just a half hour a day will yield vast improvement.  If you really want an impressive first dance, practice, practice, practice.

A few months before.  We are about 7 months out and will not start for another few months yet.  We planned on going once a week until about one month before, where we will probably go 2-3 times per week.
