What are you reading?

This weekend, I finished The Maze Runner trilogy.  I liked it for the most part, although the weird words that the author used to replace vulgarities kind of annoyed me.

I have The Night Circus and The Passage up next.

What are you reading?

Re: What are you reading?

  • I am currently reading Gregory Maguire's Son of a Witch... it's basically the sequel to Wicked. I haven't gotten too far into it yet, though, so we'll see how it is.

I don't read too often for leisure anymore, though, because of my school schedule.

  • I just started A Feast for Crows, from the Game of Thrones series.  I think that's going to go on the back burner though.  I saw the previews for Anna Karenina and Les Miserables this past weekend when we saw Argo, and I really want to see both.  So, I need to read both books before that.   I have until Christmas to read Les Mis, but I don't remember when Anna Karenina comes out.  So, that's probably up first.

I had to do a book talk on a young adult book for my literacy course and decided to do it on Wicked... I re-read all 400+ pages in 2 days. LOL. And Son of a Witch was right next to it at the library, so I just grabbed both of them. I loved the musical (saw it twice - once in Chicago, once in NYC) and couldn't believe how different it was from the book.

I recently purchased the Huble eBook Bundle and I'm making my way through that.  I love John Scalzi's "Old Man's War".  It appears to be the first book in a series, so I'll probably read more of those when I finish the rest of the bundle.  I'm currently working on Cory Doctorrow's "Pirate Cinema".  Hasn't grabbed me yet, but I'm not ready to give up on it either.
  • I'm reading The American Heiress by Daisy Goodwin. It's pretty engrossing. I also started and promptly stopped reading By Nightfall by Michael Cunningham. I should have listened to the scores of bad reviews, but I saw the book at a used book store so I grabbed it anyway.

I know! I've seen it here in Tampa, and in NYC, the book is completely different. You should read the other two- there are four total.

What are the other two? I only knew about Son of a Witch (which scored brownie points with my professor; she didn't realize there were ANY sequels to Wicked).
  • I'm reading Gone with the Wind.  I was expecting to hate it.  Holy moly - I love it.  It takes dedication (the copy I have is nearly 900 pages), but I'm around page 600 and thoroughly thoroughly enjoying it.  I'm not big on romance and, quite frankly, this book has very little romace and is so much more about how the Civil War/Reconstruction affected the South.

After this, I think I'll read JK Rowling's new book: A Casual Vacancy.
  • I just finished reading the Shoemaker's Wife, which was pretty meh all in all, but the historical aspects of it were pretty awesome.

@peekaboo - I am so jeaous that you are reading that! I just finished those books not too long ago and I didn't want them to end. Didn't know what to do with myself for a while because I poured so much time into them.

Yeah, the first few chapters were pretty dry. But once it got more into Elphaba's childhood and life at Shiz, I couldn't put it down. I was a little astounded as to how sexual it was, though.

The first season is basically the first book, word for word.  However, the books explain a helluva lot more about what is going on.  You understand the motivations and what is going on much more with the books.  However, it departs from the books in Season Two, or so I've heard.

The books move slowly.  They bored me a bit, but my husband tore through them.

I have my grandmother's first edition of this book.  Much much better than the movie.  I had also read a book of Margart Mitchell's letters where I found out in a footnote that Scareltt's original name was Pansy O'Hara but the publisher didn't like it.

  • Right now I'm reading "Catherine the Great, Portrait of a Woman" by Robert Massie and "Our Last Best Chance: A Story of War and Peace" by King Abdullah II of Jordan.
Proud to be an old married hag!! image
  • I read The Night Circus a few months back, and enjoyed it more than I thought I would. It reminded me of old school writing, if that makes any sense.

I just finished The Maze Runner, which is a YA lit book, and while I didn't really like it (the cheesy made up swear words were a little much), I can see why it would be of interest to pre-teens.

And ... I have read all of the Game of Thrones except the latest one - and I just needed a break from Westeros for a while! I found book three to be tedious, and there were too many characters to keep track of, but I agree with PP, it makes the series make more sense.

I'm not really sure what I'll read next...

Oh, Pansy is baaaad.  Especially because, in current slang, Scarlett is definitely NOT a pansy!

Her name is so different than her sisters', though.  Careen and Suellen?  Scarlett dodged a bullet.  :-)

I read it.  I hated it.  Don't worry - it was a struggle for me to finish.  In fact, most of Maqguire's books have been that way for me.  I've given up on trying, which pains me because The Wizard of Oz is my favorite movie.
