How do you successfully sell a wedding dress?

I have a brand new weddding dress.  It is very high quality.  It has never been worn.  I have tried posting the dress on several differnt sites but have been unsuccessul in selling it.  I have the dress, veil, and tiara listed for $500.  What else can I do to try to sell this dress?  It is not something that I want laying around my house.  Thanks!

  • Did you describe fabric, designer, collection?  It's kind of important to know.  Also you need pictures from all angles + detail.

  • You could consider donating it.  There are plenty of organizations that take wedding dresses and give them to women who can't afford one.

I would also suggest this....A wedding dress is such a personal item and specialized fit, I'd imagine it'd be very hard to buy one without trying it on or a good return policy.
  • Have many pictures of the detailing and the full dress, as well as any shots from the designers page, and make sure you've included details about the size, style, and manufacturer. Putting the original cost and if it has tags show those and list it as NWT (new with tags is better than new without tags). I would just keep reposting it if the listings expire.

  • Have you tried eBay or listing it on your local craigslist? Also, there are wedding dress consignment stores that will help you sell your dress, see if there is one in your area. They do take part of the money, but some money is better than none :)

  • I sold mine on Oncewed.com. I used photos from the internet and also used photos of it on me, and took photos of whatever imperfections it had. You also might be asking too much money for it if you aren't getting any hits. I sold my dress for 1/3 of what I bought it for. HTH!

Is $500 a reasonable price compared to what you paid?  You cannot expect to get 100% of your money back.  Search for similar dresses by the same designer and see what prices those are listed at.

  • I was going to ask, what did you pay for it?  Because no one will pay more than about 50% of the cost. Doesn't matter if it was never worn, if it is not from the store, it is not new and you'll never get close to full price for it.  If you are asking too close to the original price, then people will just buy it new.  And adding the veil and tiara may not help because people may want a different veil or not wear a tiara.

Also, is it designer?  I know designer dresses (like Monique L'Huillier) sell well on preownedweddingdresses.com.  But if is like David's Bridal, those are cheap enough that you aren't as likely to sell it.

I'd drop the price and see if it sells. If not, donate it.
  • I have tried selling one online from 8 years ago on Craigslist and a pre-owned wedding dress website.  NOTHING!  I would have even thought a local play house or school would buy it for a stage costume.  But still zip.

So my dad told me I should take to my local Church and donate it.  If any one was getting married and could use a dress they would know.
