And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

And those working shouldn't stick to the policy of the store in which they are employed?

What exactly is your point here?  The OP never indicated that employees did anything incorrectly according to their company policy.

Unless you think that because you said so, the rules change if YOU are in the store.

I worked retail in a store with a pretty strict return policy. People complained about it all the time. But guess what? While it was my job to try and make people happy, it was <strong>not</strong> my job (Or within my authority) to decide when the return policy could and could not be violated. That was for the owner of the company to decide. The most I could do is say as nicely as possible "This is our return policy, and I don't have the authority to do anything about it".

The only thing that I had the power to do was shoot the corporate office an email advising we received a complaint. And as long as the store was making money, corporate really didn't care if people didn't like the return policy.

And while I can't speak for Claire's, at the company I worked for it was laid out very clearly in the Employee Handbook that a violation of any company policy could result in disiplinary action up to and including termination of employment.

I had bills to pay and a car to keep on the road.  I'm sorry, but somebody being pissed off that they couldn't get their $20 back wasn't worth me losing my damn job over.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Boycotting Claire's/Icing : How is explaining a corporate policy and sticking to it not having good customer service.  I've been in customer service for nearly a decade, and the customer always getting their way is NOT synonamous with "good customer service". If the manager had called her an idiot, rolled her eyes at her, or said something rude then THAT would be poor service on her part.  Not paying attention to what you are buying (how do you not know if a bracelet is stretchy before purchasing it?  You did carry it to the register, right?) and not paying attention to the return policy have nothing to do with the "service" the OP received in the store.

  • Yeah, pretty much every place I've ever shopped has had the return policy printed on the back of the receipt, or sometimes posted up by the customer service counter.  It's up to the store to make the information available, it's up to the customer to seek out the information prior to purchase if they feel it will be necessary.

Seriously, it's $20 of cheap-looking costume jewelry.  Hardly boycott fodder.

<div align="left">You and OP are the prototypes of the customers people who work retail despise.  When I worked it years ago, I learned pretty quickly that the customer is, in fact, almost never right.  Even now, I keep that in mind.

It's a sales associates job to assist you, not serve you.  It is also her job to follow corporate policy.

Finally, Claire's? Really?  How old are you?</div>

<div>As someone who has spent their entire working life in retail and made a successful career of it, I am highly offended by your ignorance and self centered approach to the rest of the world. I'm not sure if you know this, but guess what? You aren't a princess as you may like to believe, nor are you any better than I because I am working in the store in which you happen to grace with your presence. Most people in retail actually do care deeply about their customers, contrary to popular belief. However, is some snotty girl throwing a hissy fit over $20 worth losing my job over? Hardly. Will I apologize greatly and do everything I am authorized to do for her? Damn right I will.</div><div>
</div><div>The store shouldn't have had crap in front of their return policy sign (I only say this as a retail manager simply because they should have been more aware of their visual merchandising and organization). But would you have really stopped and read it if the sign was right in front of you? No. If you had the foresight to read the sign, YOU WOULD HAVE ASKED THE ASSOCIATE ABOUT THE RETURN POLICY. The fact that they actually had a sign is more than most corporate retail provides. </div><div>
</div><div>I'm glad most of you are decent human beings and you understand that you are not the center of the universe and expect people to fall on hands and knees and <strong>serve</strong> you wherever you go. The reason people stay in retail all their lives and take BS from dumb b****es occasionally is because the majority of the people out their are normal and emotionally balanced. And those people are worth it.</div><div>

Actually most stores I shop at that do not allow returns/exchanges say before checkout " Are you aware of our return policy". As the initial person pointed out she did not recieve that warning and the displayed policy was covered up. I'm not saying she should've been rude or that the someone should do something against store policy but the manager clearly saw the sign was blocked which could, understandingly, lead to more frustration on the customer's behalf. Although it's just $20 and yes it's Claires , sometimes it's the principle of the matter. Did she learn a lesson - probably. Can I understand her frustration- certainly.

  • It's understandable to be frustrated.

But the bottom line is that as a consumer, YOU have to inform yourself of the store's policies.
  • I am going to boycott those stores, but not because of OP.

Just because their shiit is ugly and for little girls.

Yes : Forever 21, Giti (I think it's mostly in FL), and  I think any store I've shopped at that does not allow returns.

  • not sure if this is true but i once heard claires and icing prodcuts were laced with the same poison that all those kiddie toys from china were...and then the toys obviously were recalled.
