I just got engaged and am SO EXCITED! all of the wedding planning is really overwhelming though. is it tacky to not send save a dates and just send an invitation?

    How would not sending STDs be tacky?  No STDs are purely optional and are definitely not necessary.  H and I didn't send STDs and we still managed to have a 95% turn out from our invite list.

    I know for very casual weddings I have heard of people sending a STD through e-mail, just to get the word out.

    Save the dates are not necessary and I hadn't even heard of them until I came to these wedding sites.  I loved the idea so i did them.  But I also did a FB event Save the date and got about 20 rsvp's already for the wedding.

    STDs are a modern thing so it's absolutely not tacky to go without. I agree with PPs that sending them is good if you are having a DW or lots of OOT guests.

    This be might be a regional thing but where I am from everyone sends them it is weird if you don't.
