Name Change...

Ok so I changed my name at the SS office, DMV (license and reg), bank, and now I'm working on the credit cards, work (benefits) etc. I feel like I'm forgetting stuff. I still have to do the car insurance. Anything that you married ladies forgot to do? Did you change your title to your car? Do you automatically get new credit cards sent to you once you change it (I did it with my online account)? Do I need to call them? TIA!

I didn't change my name, so I am of no help.  I just wanted to say that I love your teasers from Dave on FB!  ;-)

Whoa, you already have your marriage certificate? I thought it took several weeks to get it...

It's been over a year for me... and I still have my passport in my maiden name... and a few random credit cards (not the main ones) but like Sears, Old Navy (the ones I don't really use)... my sister has been married over 2 years and she is still in process... not everything has to be done right away... actually yesterday I went to the pharmacy and my prescription was under my maiden name and they couldn't find it forever... What I've been doing is signing anything that's in my maiden name with my old signature... and then using my new signature for anything I have changed. I've still got A LOT to change to my new name.

you dont have to change the title of your car, I was told that since the titles have a barcode now, if they scan them it comes up on the computer with whatever is on your license (the DMV is linked to it or something?)Umm lets see...  gotta change all your bills.  Student loans?  order new checks if you want (I've been crossing my old name out and writing in my new name and initialing it until the checks I have are gone)... I would call about the credit card just to make sure, you might have only changed the billing name or something.  I found that most places won't let you do it online (banks, student loans, etc) but some do so it's worth a shot to try that first!

One of the Attorneys I work with said the other day that her student loan company told her not to even bother changing her name with them.  They told her she could if she wanted, but as long as a payment was made each month, they couldn't care less who'se name was associated with it.  Moral of the story: don't sweat it too much.  Ooh, that same attorney also has her maiden name as her middle name and just changed it with SS, and all others followed suit, so I personally won't be doing the Probate Court route, unless I hit a snag in the process.
