I think it's a nice way to honor your family and/or "keep" your maiden name if you don't feel a need to keep it legally. If it has a family crest, I like that even better.
I think its weird. But I also don't think that my maiden name is a part of my identity, its just a name. But if you like the idea then you should go for it because it doesn't really matter what I think.
A girlfriend of mine did this. She's Irish, and her Irish heritage is really important to her. She had her name tattooed across a green four leaf clover on her left shoulder blade. It's bitchin.
I wouldn't get a tattoo of my maiden name. But then again... I'm not a tattoo person.
I'm gonna do it. I made up my mind on that a while back. My last name has always been a really big part of my identity. I'm happy to change it to FI's, but I like the idea of being able to keep my maiden name permanently in some form.

I think it's best when people get tattoos that are special or significant and have special meaning to that person. Lots of people get generic tattoos just for the sake of getting inked and being able to say "I have a tattoo." I think if it's going to be on your body for the rest of your life, it should be a little more significant than a Chinese symbol that may or may not mean "friendship," barbed wire or effin' flames.
But then again, people do what they're gonna do. Again: I like your idea.
It's a fine idea, but I find it bizarre that you're soliciting the opinions of complete strangers online. If you're going to put it on yourself permanently, you may want to actually be confident enough in your decision to not have to ask random people.
I think that is a great idea, I personally love my maiden name, mostly because I changed my name to it only a few years ago (its a long story but basically I changed my name to match the man that raised me) and since I chose that name, I love it but it is important to my FI to have me have his last name so I am changing it, but that is a great idea, I might just have to use it too.

the board is called 'chit chat' so i'm chitting and chatting.
That is so crazy that your thinking of this - I'm really concidering it, but so far I haven't done it. My maiden name is 6 letters long and I was going to get it on my back/shoulder blade. But I love the idea. Some people give me sideway glances when I say it, but I say I'm a (last name) thru and thru"

sweet! I have always been called by my last name, some people are surprised when they hear my first name b/c they never associate me with my first name! All my tattoos are in easy to hide places (including my back/shoulder blade) it makes them feel like a little secret <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-smile.gif" border="0" alt="Smile" title="Smile" /> this one would go on my ribs/side (if/when i do get it!)

But, if you want the tattoo - go for it!
Lauren I think it's a cool idea- although I'm not a tattoo person, I'd say go for it!
