Grooms and Groomsmen.... Vests or Not?

Hi gals,

I'm a NYE bride, so its getting to the time when tuxes are having to be decided for the men of the wedding.  I have been noticing in wedding magazines lots of men aren't wearing vests.  I'm not crazy about the look of them, but it is sharp when they're all in the same wedding color and coordinating with the BMs.

However, I have dont have a 'color' persay, the BM dresses are a bronze/copper color, and my wedding palette is bronze, gold & ivory.  I was thinking, I'm going to have a heck of a time finding something to match for the guys... Maybe, just maybe, I could put them in a sharp black suit, no vests and a patterned tie to combine the bronze, black and ivory somehow that I wouldn't have to worry about it being matchy-matchy.

Advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!  Thank you in advance.

  • I think your idea sounds fine. Have you asked your FI what he wants to wear, though? He is the one wearing it, after all. ;)
  • Great question, thanks... It is most important what he thinks, he's up for wearing anything in areas that I'm concerned about.  He's picking his own suit, style, etc.  As for colors and the details to accompany it, he says thats my department.

  • The vests aren't necessary, but they do look nice IMO at the reception once the jackets are off because then its not just a white shirt and tie.  I really like vests though.

Where are you renting your tuxes from?  Ours came from Tuxedo Junction, but I know they aren't in all areas.  We went with their diagonally striped ties.  The GM wore pink, but my dad wore a really nice bronzey color that had different shades of gold and brown and such.  He wore the black tux and vest like the guys, but went with that tie to match my moms brownish bronzish dress and it looked great.

  • I'm not doing vests for the guys. I really think it's more of just a personal preference (and his opinion does matter) than anything else. We are renting tuxedo's for the groomsmen and then I just bought a really nice silk tie instead of using what the rental place offered.

  •  a black vest with a bronzy tie could also look really chic
  • It definitely does look very sharp with the bronzey tie and black tux.  My dad looked great in it.  I'm trying to add a picture of it but this 4 MB size limit is hard since barely any of my photos are that small!

  • I've always been kind of opposed to vests and cumberbunds. They just look so Prom-y to me.
  • Thanks everyone for your input... I guess it'll just take going and trying on a few options and seeing which look him and I like the best.  I like being unique and different, sometimes thats a thin line tho, I wasn't sure if anyone else didn't do vests.

I appreciate all your opinions!  Thanks!
