Strapless Gowns

Just wondering if anyone else out there has had a problem buying a wedding dress because most of them are strapless.  I don't have the greatest arms, so even off the shoulder or halter or spaghetti strap gowns don't look good.  Why can't the designers make more dresses with cap sleeves?

Re: Strapless Gowns

  • Most dress shops should be able to show you sleeve options that you can order to be made with your dress.  Have you tried asking if they can show you if and how different dresses would look if they added sleeves?

Also, you can get a bolero jacket, or a shawl, or some other sort of cover-up.
  • I did have difficulty--I needed straps more for my height than for anything else. All of the strapless gowns I was finding had very short bodices that weren't working for me.

Maggie Sottero and Mori Lee probably carry more styles of necklines than any other brands I've seen, though it can be difficult to find samples to try on simply because brides are buying strapless gowns right now. If you find a gown you like, but can't find anywhere to try it on, ask if your local bridal salon can borrow a sample from elsewhere-sometimes they can help.

Another option would be to go custom or semi-custom. Casablanca will remake the bodice of any of their gowns into the neckline of your choice. So if you find a strapless gown that's otherwise perfect, you can pay a little extra and have it changed to a V-neck or scoop neck.
  • I didn't want a strapless dress so I ordered mine online from perfect bridal.com and it came in 2 weeks and fits perfectly, has see-through sleeves.

I'm not a fan of strapless because not everyone has toned arms and I noticed alot of brides pick up the top of the dress (bust) unconsciously during reception, guess they're worried it will fall or inch lower....I want to be comfortable plus not look like all the other brides in strapless so I chose one with sleeves
  • Thanks everyone!

  • You can do a search for "modest wedding gowns" too! A lot of girls like to wear them and in the past they were maybe a little bit too stuffy but these days they are not so bad!
