Bridesmaids Dresses for a Winter Wedding: Fabric Etiquette???

Hi ladies! I'm having a lot of trouble trying to figure out which direction to go here. I'm having a winter wedding in Massachusetts at the Barn at Gibbet Hill. We want the overall feel of our wedding to be warm and relaxed, but quite frankly our "barn" is elegant and formal. So here is my problem. I already know that I'd like to have navy or midnight blue dresses for my bridesmaids, but my fiance is having a problem with the heavier fabrics (e.g. satin as opposed to chiffon) and thinks its "too old" and "something my mother would wear". But I seriously cannot imagine having the girls outside, in the snow, wearing chiffon. Am I just being closed minded here or what? Any advice on this?? Thanks!!! :)

PS--This is a style I recently fell in love with, its a stretch charmeuse. http://www.dessy.com/dresses/bridesmaid/6624/?color=midnight&colorid=47#.T6aLOO3ST_c

Re: Bridesmaids Dresses for a Winter Wedding: Fabric Etiquette???

  • If your wedding is inside then they will be fine so chiffon won't be a problem
  • skippylouwho : We'll be taking pictures outside in the snow, so that is adding to my concern. I just can't decide if chiffon is appropriate for winter :/
  • I don't think it's an "etiquette" thing so much as a "look" thing.  I personally wouldn't do chiffon in the winter.  But that's just my opinion.
  • My girls are wearing satin any my mom is wearing chiffon, I don't think you can really categorize fabrics to certain age groups. Have you talked to the girls to see what they prefer?

I personally like the heavier fabrics in the winter. Will they have jackets or wraps to cover up while outside?

I think either one is fine.  I'd probably go for long dresses though and buy them wraps/boleros/something if you want them to take pictures outside.

I think that blue charmeuse dress is GORgeous. Totally winter-appropriate.
  • I really like the blue dress; it's not matronly at all.
  • LOL! First of all,  Why is your fi talking about fabrics?? The only fabric I consider hideously outdated is velvet (and even that's making a comeback lately...).  Plus the style of a dress says more "something my mom would wear" than the fabric.

I'm also having a winter wedding and my MOH and I are wearing satin, like another poster said, for me it was about the look.  It's snowy outside and I want to be bright and catch what little light the winter offers so I wanted satin and I knew that going in to things!

I bought a David's Bridal full length slip and pea coats for me and my MOH because I thought the added layer might help us stay warm in our dresses!
