Would the popularity of the dress change your mind?

Hi there! I am new to the boards =]  I just want to pick your brain and see what you think about this situation!

So, you are trying on dresses and it's down to two dresses.  One is a little more classic and not a popular dress.  The other one is a dress that is very popular, and is only going to get more popular.  You like the popular dress a tiny bit more.  Would the popularity of it make you lean more towards the classic dress?

Re: Would the popularity of the dress change your mind?

  • i want to see photos :) you have to decide......do you want to be the 'classic' bride or the trendy bride? think 20 years from now......what dress can you see yourself being in and not regretting?

there is a dress from davids bridal that ive SEEN SO MANY PEOPLE with. pretty dress but not my style. im a davids bride, but my dress happend to be discontinued! didnt say that on the website, but i got the last one at the store!

just think about the dress YOU want and what you are going to be happy and comfortable in

You are very sweet =]  There was a maggie sottero trunk show today at my neighborhood bridal shop, and I know that i'm not getting married for almost 2 years, but I wanted to see what styles went with my body shape. So, this wasn't a "I'm buying this NOW" type of thing.
BUT, here were the two that I really liked:

the one I think is a little more "classic" and timeless:

and the one i consider more trendy and the bridal shop told me this is their most popular:

But I understand that styles change so I am going to go browsing again, just probably within a year of my date =]
  • Personally, I wouldn't want to wear a dress that I knew a bunch of other people were wearing, but I tend to be pretty rabidly anti-trendy, so take that with some major salt.  One reason I love my gown is that I've only ever seen one person with the exact same one, and she ended up buying something else.
This is a neglected planning bio.
This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • I would go with whichever one makes you feel happiest and the most gorgeous! They are both very pretty dresses. Doesn't matter if one is more popular!
  • Even if its the most popular wedding gown ever sold, the chances of you bumping into someone on your wedding day wearing the exact same dress are near impossible.  So you won't feel like its the most popular, or a one of a kind dress made just for you.  Just get a dress that is comfortable and makes you feel beautiful.

  • honestly... I was stuck between a sottero and midgley that I felt was 'classic and timeless" and the exact same dress that you are deeming "popular and trendy" (which is TOTALLY how I felt about it! gorgeous, but very popular).  I decided to go with the classic and timeless dress for me.  Since then, I've seen at least 7 other brides on these boards that have Adorae and for me, I'm glad I have a dress that not everyone else has.

    but thats just me :)
  • I'm like that.  I picked a fairly interesting dress that I know people will either love or hate.  It's different and it's so me!!  Modern.  I like trends.  But I like to stand out too.  I didn't want a dress a million people have.

I personally think the first one is really pretty.  The second one is pretty too, but it's too shiny and I tried on a maggie that had bling, and I found it too costumy and very distracting.  Too much going on distracts from the bride IMHO.

I feel, that in the first one, the lace will frame your face and show you off rather than distract.

  • I would say get the one that you love!!!  Don't worry about popularity.  People can look so different in a dress based on their body type, the color they choose, and their alterations.  I found that dresses looked totally different on me than they did on the model on the designer's website.

Also, if you are really worried about having the same dress as someone, you can always make an alteration to change it a little bit.  You can add an embelishment or you could add straps.  The seamstress might also have great suggestions for how to make your dress your own.

  • I think both dresses could stand the test of time where you wouldn't regret it in pictures in 10-20 years, but if you want to be more different/unique I would go with the first dress.  Make sure you see how they pull together with accessories and that might help you make your decision.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • I like the first one. It's different. I've seen the second style a million times... I even tried on one almost exactly like it at David's Bridal.

<div>Okay, I'm dying to know which David's Bridal gown you're talking about! Please post a picture. I was actually browsing their website and was slightly disappointed when my dress didn't show up after I clicked the "most popular" link. LOL. I agree with those who said it doesn't matter about the popularity though. It should be based on what you like and what you feel pretty in. Comfort was a big factor for me too. I tried on a gown with a corset back and a deep sweetheart and my boobs were literally creeping up my collarbone. When I sat down it was even worse. I said, "I can't wear this in front of my grandmother!" nor could I sit or dance in it. I definitely recommend doing the sit test before purchasing!</div>

  • have you tried both of them on? I like the second dress better. The first one is different but I just don't think it has that I'm a bride look. It really does not matter  if it is a popular dress no one is going to care and you are the only bride at your wedding so it's not like you would have the same person showing up at your event with the same gown.
