HELP? Groom and Groomsmen attire?

Ok so I have picked my wedding dress and bridesmaids dresses! yay!  My dress is going to be ivory and the BM are wearing Lapis (a dark purple).  So I figured that since i picked out my stuff my FI should pick his out too.  He went to look at tuxs and decided he didnt want to be different from his groomsmen (too many 'unnessary' decisions he said).  So I asked what he liked and he said a black tux and black shirt with ivory vest and tie.  I feel like this is a bit too prom-ish for our candel lit winter wedding, but i don't want to hurt his feelings.  so i need some help. 
1) what do you all think? Would this look good or not?

and

2)  what other color combos do yall think would look good?

also, is it ok for the groom and GM to match? I know we could get different flowers or something.

moms are always a little wary.

i always have to tell my mom to just SIMMER!  because everything will be JUST FINE!  i told her that i wanted to wear colored shoes on my wedding day and she gave me a look like i was committing a cardinal wedding sin.  but after seeing lots of photos, she's coming around.  and she thought it was stupid for me to have a matron AND a maid of honor - but now she's ok with it.

Honestly, I strongly dislike the look of black shirts.  BUT, I think he should be able to pick what he wants.  It's fine if he wants to be the same as the groomsmen.  My h wore the same thing as the GMs.  PIB.

ETA: er, after reviewing my pics, H actually didn't wear the same thing as GMs, oops.  They all wore ivory shirts and ties but H had an ivory vest and the GMs had black vests.
