How long should the dress be?

I tried on my dress the other day to see what kind of shoes I need but then I wasn't sure how long the dress should be. It is an a-line silk dress with a lace overlay that is longer than the silk underneath. My guess is the lace should be touching the ground (with the silk about an inch or so above) but my mom says the lace should not touch the ground either. Any thoughts?

My dress grazed the ground. When I walked, you could see my shoes but had it been longer, I would have been tripping over it. I think it should be right at the ground.

  • The lace should basically sit on top of your toes. It should be just off the ground, not grazing it. Why would you want the hem of your dress ruined?
  • I certainly don't want my dress to be ruined but I also don't want the dress to look like it's too short. It's kind of tricky because if the lace doesn't graze the ground the silk is a good 2-3 inches off the ground, which seems like a bit much to me. I'm going to have to try it again with the lace barely off the ground and see how that looks. Thanks for your responses.
