Dresses from china

Hi all, I just saw a post about the dresses made in china off ebay. I searched the entire board and cant find a post with horror stories about these dresses. Does anyone have a picture/experience they;d like to share? I'm not paying $3000 for a dress that's for sure!

Re: Dresses from china

  • I researched this for a few months and ultimately decided against it. There were some complete horror stories and some brides that were happy with their gown. The few brides that I talked to that were happy with their gown, were more so happy with the price but the gown wasn't exactly what they were hoping for. I just decided I didn't want to take the gamble. I have had luck with Pearl's Place in New Orleans. You can order direct from them and they are NOT replicas/knock-offs like China gowns. The reason they are so much cheaper is because they order direct from the manufacturer/designer and there is no frills of the bridal store experience (that often costs much more). The $950 Watters gown I love is just $407 from Pearl's Place. I'd definitely say give them a call. They are super friendly and helpful.
  • I have a horror story, I posted about it. I'll sum it up by showing pictures: Supposed to look like: http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e21/Pink4Flower/IMG_0070.jpghttp://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e21/Pink4Flower/IMG_0076.jpgActually looked like:http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e21/Pink4Flower/CIMG0004.jpgI also had a HUGE hassle returning it to get my money back. I had to take it to both eBay and PayPal disputes.
  • One of the knotties in my area bought an ebay dress from China and thought her seamstress could fix it. The dress had no boning in it and it was a strapless. The seams were not straight and loose in some areas. The seamstress told her that she would have to completely take apart the dress and start over to make it the way it was supposed to be (oh, and the seamstress said the material was crap!). The bride ended up purchasing an entirely new dress from a local shop. As for you paying $3000 for a dress, you don't have to. There are tons of dresses out there for under $1000. Look at the Maggie line, Casablanca, David's Bridal. All of these have beautiful dresses for under a grand.

  • Oh, I'll also add that I ended up going back to the shop and ordered the real dress. It was only $750 so it wasn't a bad price to begin with but I thought why spend that much when I could get the same thing for $150? Well, turns out I couldn't.
  • depends on what you consider a horror story.  there have been serveral girls on here who tried this route, and many are not like the picture, need quite a few alterations, are made of cheap material and not what they expected.  if you are tight on a budget, there are still many designs out there in local stores you can buy new for a few hundred, which is at least what you'll spend on ebay and alterations.
  • have you considered looking at some of the "fancier" bridesmaid dresses? that could keep you in thje $200 range and there are many many gorgeous ones!
  • I actually had two great experiences with ordering dresses from china I ordered two because I couldn't decide between both styles and hence ordered the two dresses from two different sellers thinking one of them might be ok. (I'm almost 6ft2 and want to wear 2-3inch heels so even with extra lenght added the dresses I tried on would be too short, so I figured I would try china prior to finding a local seamstress) Well, they arrived and both looked great so I still had a really hard time choosing. I didn't need any alterations apart from having the dresses hemmed (I ordered them longer than needed just to be on the safe side) and the seamstress that hemmed the dresses couldn't believe they were actually from China. I know I might have been really lucky but I did tons of research (contacted previous buyers through the feedback system) and explained myself 100 times to make sure they knew exactly what I needed (communication was definately the toughest part) both dresses are strapless, have boning, crinoline sewn into them, and have an internal corst which to me makes all the difference.
  • I know we are trying to save a buck in this economy.  That totally makes sense.  I think you can find a reasonably priced dress under $1000 through sample sales or preownedwedding dresses.com or like Alina said, buy a fancy bridemaid dress in white.  I just had a hard time buying a dress from China directly when the United States is supposedly already a great deal in debt to that country anyway.  I wanted to support my local business's economy.  It's a tough decision, and there is no right way to do it.  I just think it's better and less riskier to buy your dress in the States if that's possible.  Good luck finding your perfect dress.

  • To vervaarsjeCould you by any chance send over the name of the company you dealt with? I did some research into ginnar bridal (found on ebay) and was hoping maybe you dealt with them?skittles_2203 at hotmail dot com
