Ladies- PLEASE be careful shopping online for a dress!!

I know, you hear about all these scams and think they won't happen to you right...well, I thought I was safe and look where I am now- less $850 and without a dress! I'm so sad...I was excited to find a bargain online for my dream dress and totally got ripped off. Here's what happened- don't let it happen to you!!I posted on PartyPop looking for my dress, a red 8115 Justin Alexander in size 6. Lo and behold, someone got in touch with me with the exact dress I was looking for. Serendipity right? I started making layaway payments through PayPal thinking it was safe to do so, you can dispute if you don't get the item right? Well, only for 45 days after each payment. So when you do layaway there's not much recourse! She gave me a real shop, with a website, and a phone number, and a location. I even signed a layaway form...stupid me I should have called and looked to see if the store had a business license. Right before my last payment I call about shipping costs, and the phone # doesn't work. I call the town where the shop is supposedly located, and end up speaking with the police department because apparently there was a shop, and the sisters running it were doing this to a lot of girls. Preying on newly engaged women looking to save some money...I've filed a police report, worked with PayPal and my bank, and filed with the attorney general's office and FTC. I'm screwed...the money is gone. Please please be careful! Shopping online is great for many things- but the wedding dress is too important. I won't do it again. :(

  • Oh my gosh!!!!!  I'm so sorry!!!!!  What a terrible thing to happen to you.  I know it won't get your money back, but if I were you, I'd call a local t.v. station and expose them on t.v.  Like "Help Me Hank" or something.  No one should have to go through that.  Thank you for sharing, and I hope your efforts will prevent this from happening to someone else.  Sorry.  =,(
  • Oh my gosh!  That's awful.  I'm so sorry to read about this.
Dr. Googs is married to Mr. Pelvis. Happily ever after!
  • That's horrible! If they do actually own a shop you could file a case with the Better Business Bureau also.  If they don't fix the problem within a certain time period it stays on the BBB website so other brides know not to trust them.
  • I know- I hope too that other girls will pay attention to what happened to me and avoid it- this is a huge setback when you're on a budget. The women that were operating this scam apparently did it to quite a few girls- I am so mad I could just drive down to Missouri and do some damage. One important tip- if you do buy from somewhere out of state- call the local courthouse in the city and find out if they have a business license! This place didn't...
  • Sounds like you didn't use a credit card?  If you did, you can get your money back, most cards insure for things like that.  My fiance just wrote a $1400 check to the photographer and I was like "What the %$&# are you doing???"  Not that I think the photographer is going to do anything bad, because he seems like a real nice guy... but you just never know.I'm so sorry about your experience, but thanks for posting to warn others.
  • omg that is horrible!! im soo sorry i hope you can recover some of the money!
