How do you decide the size?!?

Hi Ladies,I was just recently engaged and went dress shopping yesterday.  I *think* I may have found THE dress, however, I am unsure of what size to order.  A size 10 is pretty much a perfect fit everywhere except the neckline, where I get a bit of armpit spillage.  I know my body and that if I lose a bit of weight (maybe 5 pounds), I will be able to get that under control.  BUT - I am not sure if that will mean that I'll need a bunch of other alterations to make the rest of the dress fit me again (as of right now, the only thing I'd need to do is have it shortened and bustled)!ALSO - I wonder whether I should just order the next size down and just really go for it in terms of losing weight.  I think I could easily drop 10, maybe 15 pounds, with a bit of effort but I'm not sure if that will take me down a whole dress size or not.How did you ladies ever make these decisions for yourself? !?

Re: How do you decide the size?!?

  • The seamstress at my salon just measured me and told me what size I needed, and I said O.K.

  • Did you have any weight you wanted to lose?  I think my biggest problem is that I know I could lose some, but I don't know if what I could/would want to lose would constitute a whole dress size or not.
  • It's always dangerous to bank on losing weight.  I can drop 10 pounds, sure, but you can never tell where it will come from.  It would really suck if you dropped 10 pounds but it was all from your butt and not on top where you need it.I'd get the size 12 if I were you and then just get it altered when all is said and done, weight-loss wise.

  • The seamstress/saleslady at the dress shop should be able to tell you what size to order when she takes your measurements. How it worked for me was I decided what dress I wanted, she measured me, and then brought out the designer's size chart and said we'll order the dress in this size for you. I assume it works the same way at other dress shops too. It's a lot easier for alterations people to take in a dress where needed if it's slightly on the large side. It's extremely difficult to let a dress out if you order it too small. I'd probably trust what size the saleslady says to order. gl :)

  • Well....I guess that's one downfall of going to Davids Bridal.  I just picked out the size 10 and that's what fit...I didn't get as far as asking what size I should actually order.  That's probably my fault. The main thing I want to do first is get some Spanx and try it on again to see how it looks before I make the final decision. Thanks for the input!!
  • Buy the size that fits or a size up. NEVER buy a size down "hoping" you'll lose weight. It's a big mistake that too many women make.
  • please please please do not order a size down! this is such a big mistake that alot of brides make. they think ordering a size down will be a "motivater" or something... trust me, its not. Dont get me wrong, i have faith that if you want to lose weight, you can... however, i dont think you should count on losing an entire dress size. It is pretty easy to have a dress taken in... but if you DONT lose the weight, your setting yourself up for disaster. order what fits... if anything, order a size bigger... wedding planning can get very stressful, and if your anything like me, you may end up gaining weight due to stress instead of losing it!

  • Thank you for all of the advice, ladies!!  I think I will probably just order it in the size that fits and have it taken in if needed.  I found a couple of tailors that were recommended on my local board who seem to be great to work with and are much cheaper than Davids Bridal.  That will be a much bettter solution. Thanks again!
  • I will say I ordered a size 10 and ended up losing about 20 lbs. Now I am 5'10" so 20lbs isn't the same on me as it is on someone who is 5'2". But the only thing they had to do was take in the top a little. I knew going into it I wanted to lose weight but ordered the size that fit because its really easy for them to take it in. My dress was altered after in came in and now it fits perfectly.
