Dress shops deceiving?

I am short, about 5'2" without heels, and I was trying on another mermaid, drop-waist dress.  The ladies at the shop keep telling me that it "elongates me and makes me look taller!"  I love the shape of them, but I don't know whether when I look in the mirror I'm just seeing what I want to see from the pictures online (very tall slender and long models).  Also, they put you on a pedestal another 5 inches from the floor, and make you wear 3 inch heels to stand in their dresses.  Is it a bit deceiving?I just wanted to try something, moving the skirt off the "lower floor" and place it next to my feet, to get a closer feel of how the dress' length will truely look.  I guess my expression read "hmph,  I really do look short", so another lady asks "You're not going to wear heels to your wedding??"  And I'm like, wow, I AM wearing heels!  And she's like "oh" as if caught in a lie.Now I read how that sihouette can actually make you look shorter, if you're already short to begin with.  So much for the silhouette elongating me.  I guess in the end, they're just always trying to make a sale.

  • Trying to make a sale or not, you think they would be honest about what works on you and what doesn't. Obviously without seeing pictures it is hard to say, but I think that a mermaid dress might shorten you. In my mind they only do work on really tall girls, and even then they don't always work. I'm sorry you had a bad experience, maybe ask on your local for recommendations for a different salon?

  • Well I'm 5'0" and I bought a mermaid style and I think it makes me look a little taller or just normal. Anything with a big skirt made me look like I was drowning which was disappointing because that was what I origionally wanted to wear. But I couldn't find one that looked good. So I went with mermaid.
  • You also need to consider w/those styles how well you will be able to dance/sit down. Those dresses tend to be tight around your legs & they are not the most fun to dance around in. I am also 5'1 & I looked best in strapless a-line dresses.

  • Alright thanks!  I do like the fit-and-flare styles a lot, too.  They can be fairly flattering ::I think::
  • I am 5'1 and so far I probably getting a a-line dress. The part that I realized makes me look shorter is ones that have a line across my waist. I am looking for something either without a line, or if it does have a line that it is diagonal which I think helps elongagate. I usually walk around barefoot in the stores, sometimes they tell me to put on heels for the "complete look" but I probably won't wear heals for the wedding anyway. I know it is so hard to tell when the samples are like 3 inches too long. Good luck.
