Style ideas

Ok so I have been looking for my dream dress and I have tried on a couple that are nice but I dont feel like I have seen the one. I am 5'2" and 105lbs with a decent size bust so I have looked cute in basically everything(sorry if that sounds conceited I'm not but thats part of my problem)..I have mostly tried on A-line strapless dresses...Is there a different style that you think I should try on...I dont want to look shorter then I am but Im just not finding "the dress"

Re: Style ideas

  • I totally know where you're coming from.  Have you tried on mermaid or trumpet style dresses?  What details are you looking for?  Lace, beading, plain and simple?
  • I have not tried on mermaid or trumpet yet the stores I have been to didnt really have a variety of styles. I def. want some beading or design on it so it sparkles..
  • Ok I definitely think that the mermaid or more fitted style with a sweetheart neckline will fit you best since you are so petite.  Go to a salon that has more of a variety that way you can try those styles on.  I think the mermaid looks best on me, but I've started to want a more princess type dress so I'm exploring ballgowns now.  That's why I'm torn between what looks best on my body versus how I want to feel that day.
  • I had the same problem - looking "cute" in everything, as in H would say, "Awww, don't you look cute" in a head-patting kind of way. That's NOT how I wanted to feel on my wedding day! Try dresses that don't have a crinny (fit-and-flare, sheath or mermaid silhouettes). It wasn't until I did that, did I start feeling like I was wearing the dresses rather than the other way around.

  • ditto.  Try trumpet and fit and flare.  I'm 5'4" and I find that the mermaids shorten me a bit.  The spot where the dresses "break" and flare out hits too low on me since i'm short.  Instead of breaking at the knee it's below the knee which looks a bit wierd.  Not on the pedastool but standing on the ground when you see how much length you will actually have.  You could have that all taken up but it would be major alterations so trumpet/fit and flare should be best. :)  Good luck and keep us posted!
  • Nostangchick, your profile sounds like might (only I'm about 20 pounds heavier, lol). I didn't think I'd like mermaid (also called trumpet style) but I loved it when the consultant brought it out. There are tons of them. Just to give you an idea, mine is Demetrios Ilissa style 900 - http://www.brides.com/fashion/dresses/gallery/wedding_dresses/vendor/designer/demetriosilissa/detail/118356?offset=47. If you have a Brides by Demetrios store in your area, they are bound to have it.  I also wanted tons of beading and sweatheart neckline and this one has tons of beading.  I think that it's a little different than the a-line or the ballroom, which, I think more guests would expect me (or any other bride) to wear. The consultants thought it had the wow factor on me so maybe you can try something like it and see. It definitely is a very sexy feel, and very elegant at the same time. I felt a little like the a-lines made my waist look wide, and the ballrooms with the pullups were just too heavy and I felt like I was wearing a costume.  I echo what ring_pop said - I felt like the dresses with the crinny were wearring me until I put on my dress.  Definitely try a few mermaids.
  • I'm 5ft even and I'm wearing a mermaid gown. Kyle by Priscilla of boston. I thought it made made me look taller, more adult and more elegant and totally less cute!
  • Thanks for the replies everyone!! I will def. go try on some mermaid/trumpet styles dresses and see what I think :)
