I read a review online of my dress from someone who altered and dyed the dress to make it wearable again. The dress is simple enough that it would make a lovely summer special occasion dress. What do you think? Has anyone done this?

That's what I'm planning to do.  I'll cut it to tea length and either dye it a pale color to wear for summer, or a dark color for evening and winter occasions.  Then I'll have the detachable train and the material I cut from the skirt preserved so we can do something sentimental with them down the line.I'm definitely planning on finding a professional seamstress to do this for me, though.
