Chinese Knock-Off's??! Anyone?!

Ok, I know, I know I shouldn't buy a knock off for a million different reasons, but my budget is so small.I just wanted to hear anyone's experience firsthand?  Good, okay?  Horrible?  My wedding isn't for 8 months so I figured if I ordered it now and maybe a size bigger, I'd have lots of time to get it altered, etc.Any suggestions?

  • I know people really disagree with this but I too would love to have some opinions from people that have actually done it? Any takers?

  • In my opinion I would stay away from them. I have yet to hear one positive review form those whom have chosen to go that route. It seems that the dresses never come out right, and are less than desirable quality, in fabrics, or craftsmanship. Brides tend to then spend more in purchasing another dress, or fixing the one they received. If cost is an issue there are numerous other options; David's Bridal, pre-owned websites, discount online retailers(netbride.com, pearlsplace.com, rkbridridal.com, alternative dresses(i.e. bridesmaid dresses in white), jcrew.com, sample sales, etc I just think that this is a day when your outfit should be all you ever dreamed of and I would not risk it by purchasing from some unknown retailer in China. If you do go with one of those Chinese knock offs, it is up to you, but you get what you pay for.
  • I am curious about this as well... I see on ebay they have good reviews but I am still nervous about actually taking the risk until I hear more specific reviews about the dresses..

  • I worked with a costume designer who creates stunning venetian and period wedding dresses, she took a chinese ebay seller to court for using her photos to sell knock offs, when they got to court the knock off was HORRENDOUS, it was made from cheap lining material, had no boning in the corset and looked like a rag, it didn't look anything like the photo/original, I wouldn't have dressed my dog in it for halloween!Generally the fabric/workmanship is poor, shipping is expensive, you would be better off shopping sample sales or looking online for a second hand dress or buy a "non-wedding dress" off the rack.IMO you will spend more money trying to sort the dress out that it actually cost!
  • I know I have posted on this subject before. But I have a friend who just insisted in trying this for her wedding. It was a total disaster. With a lot of luck she did try Pearl's Place who were able to get a rush gown for her wedding in Italy. The gown that was delivered was sort of a joke and not at all wearable. The fit and the finish was terrible. As per the previous poster that there are many options for real gowns if you want to save money and of course those are Pearlsplace.com and Netbride.com that come to mind immediately.
  • i am a fashion designer who works w/chinese manufacturers on a daily basis- so i figured this would be super easy for someone like me. it was a HUGE disappointment - they did so many things wrong. i ordered 2 bridal dresses and 6 BM dresses. they basically ignored the very detailed technical pkg i made for the order. the problems ranged from them using the wrong color and wrong type of fabric, to making the dresses 2 sizes too small, to using mismatched zippers, to having holes in some of the dresses, to the order arriving LATE the week of the wedding- with no time to fix anything. if you like disappointment and aggravation, i say go ahead and waste your time and money.
  • PS, i had to pay for shipping to china to return everything to them for a refund. the shipping ALONE was $250.
  • i would stay far away.  even with a very small budget you can shop new if you are flexible and creative.
