To buy or to make?

I've tried many styles of dresses but they don't quite have what I want. I'm having a vintage wedding and I'm starting to think that I'm going to need a costum made gown. My question is this: Would it be more expensive to buy a dress and have it altered? or to just go ahead and make a costume made dress?  I found one gown that is similar to what I want but is going to need alot of alteration, buying just the gown will be 1300 plus the alterations =/

maybe post of pictures of the dress you want and some knotties might be able to find something similar and cheaper- post of your local board and see if anyone knows of a seamstress that can make a dress- usually its just cheaper to buy a dress and alter it

I would imagine it would be cheaper to buy a dress and do alterations. I make alot of blankets and stuff and fabric gets really expensive when you have to buy alot of it.

That is the sytle I'm looking for, and Hollywood Dreams is the only one I found so far but they are located in England and it makes me nervous purchasing something that's so far away.

oh your in good shape there are many dresses that - do you want it in that pink? its alot like a quinceanera dress- also what do you like about it.. do you like the pickups in the back

If you post on your local board, there may be someone who knows a really good seamstress. I do sew, and have seen several patterns similar, but with less "pouf" and pull-up in the back. A seamstress would just have to make the train part longer, so there's additional fabric to pull up.

Tha lace one on the right...I wanted something simple but something that made me look like a bride, and I think the lace is what does it for me:)

I made my wedding dress. I had spent quite a bit of time trying on dresses and I'm having a picnic wedding, so I wanted something that was tea length, and simple. A friend of the family who does alterations had me pick up a pattern of the dress I wanted (Walmart for 5.00) She had material left from a wedding dress she did alterations on. The bride decided she didn't want the train on the dress, so she just left it behind. I used that material and had just enough for my dress. I took the lace flowers off of my mom's wedding dress and died them flamingo pink and put them on the bottom of the dress. In total, the dress was only $7.00 to make. If you find a really good deal on material, making the dress might be the way to go. That way, you're not paying so much for the dress itself and then alterations.
