Hoop vs. Hoopless

Hello Ladies,

My wedding gown is Maggie Sottero Mikala.  Its an older collection that is a slim A-line gown.  My question of the day (as I am completely obsessing over this dress) is what type of petticoat to buy.  I bought the dress from ebay, not realizing that there are a ton of questions that salespeople answer and help you with.  I searched online and it said to use a slim a-line petticoat with two hoops.

I think a hooped petticoat would give me the fullness I need, but was worried about walking in a hoop skirt.... Anyone have any experience with this?

Re: Hoop vs. Hoopless

  • I've only ever seen hoops worn to support a MASSIVE ballgown. If your dress is the one I found on line when I searched, then I don't think you need them, and I think they'd be a pain in the arse all night.

Are you going to be having it altered? If you are, and it's a bridal shop, then I'd call and see if they have some crinolines for sale that you could try. Otherwise, I'd call some bridal shops and say you already have the dress (maybe say you're borrowing it from a friend) but need a crinoline and want to bring the dress in to find the right one. I'd start with David's Bridal, they might let you do it.

But I'd say a simple a-line petticoat should do the trick just fine! Something like this:

  • As a girl I had hoop formals and they can be beautiful, possibly your dress may need that but typically you can get a crinoline that will work very well. Crinolines come in all kinds of "poofiness" so you can probably get what you need.

With hoops it does take a couple minutes to get the walking down. They are very light, very comfortable but you can get a sway going in the skirt if you aren't paying attention. Not a huge problem by any means. It is possible to flip your skirt up when  you sit but that also rarely happens. Some people think the hoops might be uncomfortable to sit on but they aren't.
  • you can still take your dress to a store and ask (if you plan to buy from the store instead of online), and you can try on the different options

  • You could get a 1 hoop crinoline...it'll give you a little fullness, but won't be overwhelming.
