Help! Does my dress look too tight? (PIP)

I just had my second fitting on Saturday and have been feeling really uneasy about my dress ever since.  I am hoping that my fellow knotties can give me honest feedback.

In my first fitting, they had to take in the waist by about 1.5 inches and let out the hips by about 1 inch.  When I showed up on Saturday, there were these little bunches of fabric, one by my waist and the other by my hips.  The seamstress basically said that it is the result of the alterations and is being caused by the way the lace lays over the satin.  I asked if it was just too tight, but the seamstress said no, that it fit me like a glove, and that I was nit-picking.  My mom and MOH were with my and swore up and down that the dress fit great and that no one will ever notice.  However, I'm not convinced.  I need some unbiased opinions here.... does it look like the dress is too tight?

Re: Help! Does my dress look too tight? (PIP)

  • How does the dress feel when it is on?  Can you breathe?  Can you sit comfortably?

Honestly, I would not be happy with the wrinkles around your hips and upper bust area.  If the alterations are done correctly that should not have happened.

I can't really tell you if it is too tight because only you can make that determination in the overall feel of the dress.  But I would get a second opinion from another seamstress about the fabric wrinkles/bunches.

  • No, not at all.  If it were too tight, you'd start to see horizontal puckering of the fabric, and there's none.  I think "fit you like a glove" is what you're feeling.
  • It doesnt look to tight from the pictures but if it feels to tight to you then it might be.
  • It doesn't look too tight, but I don't think that those "lines" of fabric near your waist or hips should be there if it was done correctly.
  • I didn't feel too tight, but it wasn't loose or anything.  I could breathe and sitting down was okay.  I just don't know what is causing that wrinkling/bunching?  The seamstress is at the bridal salong where I bought the dress... I figured that they knew what they were doing.  Super concerned right now.  My wedding is in 19 days... aghh
  • those wrinkles on your back and around your hips should not be there if the alterations were done correctly.   It doesn't look too tight, but your dress shouldn't bunch up like that.

    Exactly this.
Hopefully that's something that can be fixed!

  • I had similar bunching after my dress was taken in and I felt the same way you did.  To fix it, my seamstress removed some of the boning that was holding it tight and it released the wrinkles for the most part.  Maybe she can shorten the boning somehow or release the lace just a bit?

Also, your dress should loosen up a bit on your wedding day.  Mine was super snug (but I could walk and sit) and I thought it was too tight.  But it definitely "gave" out and didn't fall down.

  • I'm with the "it's not too tight but the seamstress did the alteration incorrectly" crowd. I would see if anything can be done to get rid of those lines.

  • You still have plenty of time.  I would take your dress to another seamstress to see if they can fix the problem.

Like all PP have said, if the alterations were done correctly then it would not bunch and just because the lady works for the bridal salon that you bought your dress does not mean she is good or knows what she is doing.

  • I didn't even notice the bunches until I re-read your post.  It definitely doesn't look too tight, I think it looks like it fits you perfectly.

  • Did you have on proper under garments?  I know that can make a huge difference.  Also some fabric does not slide on your skin like it does over hose or a body shaper.   If your not happy then return to the alterations dept.  Maybe it needs pressed or  steamed?
  • I think that if you can sit in it without it feeling too tight than you are ok. I honestly think it looks tight, but it doesn't look bad. So try sitting down in it. If it feels tight, you dont want to be passing out durring your wedding or make yourself sick to your stomach after you eat dinner because it's too tight.
  • My opinion is that the seamstress may have not done it right. Take it to another place and ask them if there is a problem and if so if it's worth further tampering with the fabric.

I would try and lose just a pound by not having anything fried and not to eat after 6pm 3 nights in a row... always works like a charm to lose just that extra quarter inch for me to zip up. Im sure that would help get rid of the crease.

It IS there... you can see it in the picture, but your mum is right it's not very apparent.

I hope you have a WONDERFUL day!!
