Am I giving myself enough time?

My wedding is at the end of October and my bridal gown appointment is for early February.

Am I giving myself enough time?

It's a fancy boutique and I don't expect any major alterations - just fitting. I assume that will cut down on the time??

Re: Am I giving myself enough time?

  • You'll be cutting it really close.

My dress will take about 6 1/2 months to get here (ordered from a "fancy" salon). I know some dresses can take 8 mo to a year to get in... factor in time for your alterations (at least 2 weeks) and you're really pushing it.

If you can go earlier, go earlier -- especially since there is no guarantee you'll find what you like on that one appointment. Also be sure to discuss time frames with your sales associate because it will vary on the dress.

  • My wedding is the last weekend of September and my DOC told me to make sure I order by February in order to have enough time to get the dress without paying a rush fee, and also have time for alterations.
  • It will really depend on the salon and the dress. I'm getting married in June and just ordered my dress in early November and was told it would be in the end of April.  I was assured it would be in no problem and I didn't even have to pay a rush fee.  If they felt rushed, I'm sure they would have talked me in to a rush fee.  Most dresses are 6 months out and you end up getting them earlier, but definitely depends on the designer.  Once you start getting an idea of dresses/designer you like, it may be good to research the designer on a typical delivery time.  My dress is Casablanca and I was told hers were typically 5-6 months.

  • If I were you, I would go earlier and here's why.  I ordered my dress at the end of December for my end of October wedding.  It was a boutique salon and the dress was custom made to my body measurements.  The salon told me it would take 4 to 5 months.  It didn't come in until early August.  When I went to try it on at the seamstress, I discovered that the salon had made an unauthorized change to the dress order and the top of the dress was different than the sample.  She had to send it back to the designer and it then took 5 more weeks to come back.  I managed to squeeze in my two fittings and everything was fine, but my point is to build in extra time in case something goes wrong.

  • When I worked at a bridal store we told girls 8-10 months to be safe--especially if you wanted custom alterations. For example, I'm a Casablanca bride and I'm having them add a corset and changing the neckline to a sweetheart, it is taking longer than the standard time.

I would hate for you to find something you're going to have to have custom alterations on, or have something traumatic happen during shipping or have them send you the wrong dress style or something crazy like that. Its always safer to have cushion. I would try to start shopping in January--you never know how long its going to take to find the dress you want.

  • I have heard that there may be shipping issues or delays from overeas countries where most gowns are made early in the year.  Don't chance it, order the sooner the better for you.
Did you know that in the month of January, most factories shut down.  Order your gown early in case somehing goes wrong.

    Good luck!!
