Borrow a dress or buy your own?

So my MOH has a beautiful wedding gown that she said I could wear if I wanted. All I would have to do is have it cleaned and pay for the alterations. I keep going back and forth with the idea. If I use her dress that would save me money and I could use that money towards something else. However if I use her dress that also means I wouldn't have a dress of my own...  It is an expensive item that you never wear again. But if I were to have a daughter I wouldn't have a dress to pass down to her... But how many brides out there really where their mother's dress? What do you all think?

Re: Borrow a dress or buy your own?

  • I didn't wear my mom's gown and I don't think I'd care if my daughter wore mine or not.

Honestly, I'd get my own gown.

  • guess i'm in the minority here, i wouldn't borrow a dress because i would be scared of what could happen to it.

  • I was going to alter my mom's dress (cut off the sleeves and change the neckline) but when I tried it on it was really heavy so I changed my mind.  Now I'm going to use it for christening gowns for my future children.  The day we took my mom's dress out of the box and I tried it on was really special for both of us and I'm glad I had that opportunity.  I am going to wear her veil.  I don't expect my future daughter to wear my dress, but it would be fun to take it out, laugh over the styles, and let her try it on.  I would buy your own dress.
