Stressing!

Hi Ladies,

I'm having some dress stress! I'm getting married 5/29/11 and I'd really like to start shopping for my dress this summer. Everyone keeps telling me to start shopping. The trouble is I still have about 50lbs to lose. Do you think I should go for fun to get some ideas of what I like? Or is it just a waste because I know I definitely won't be this size when I get married. Has anyone been in this situation? I'm eager to start shopping!!

Secondly, most people are telling me I need to order my dress 10 months prior to the wedding. Clearly, that's not going to happen because I can't lose 50 lbs in a month. Haha. Is that only true if I have the dress custom made? Should I just plan to buy a dress off the rack and have it altered? I've been told a dress shouldn't be taken in more than 2 sizes. I need some advice! Help!

Thanks for listening =]

Re: Stressing!

  • Honestly, you need to ask yourself some tough questions - are you really going to lose the 50lbs?  Are you going to make the committment and the lifestyle change?  Are you already making progress toward your goal?

I don't ask to be skeptical, I only ask because I understand what a huge challenge it is to do what's necessary to lose 50lbs.. I mean hello, that's more than half an Olsen twin.

As far as dress shopping goes, I don't think you need to start immediately, but I WOULD start seriously looking within the next 2 or 3 months.  If you're making progress on your weight loss goal and you find your dress, you can talk to the bridal salon and get their advice - they'll be able to tell you how long it will take for your dress to come in.

But also, as you get closer to May, don't forget about sample and blowout sales.  That's how I got my gown - it's stunning, and I walked out with it that day.  So you have lots of options.

    Good luck to you!

I bought my dress in late February and I'm getting married in July. The dress has come and I've had my first fitting. You'll be fine. Relax and wait until winter to start your search. Have fun!!

  • I am a picky/indecisive bride who is also getting married next May, I actually started shopping, mostly casually, this past February. I tried on around 35 dresses and now I still stuck on two that I have fallen in love with! So, it can be a process that can take months--depending on your personality.

As for weight loss, I plan/hope to lose 30 pounds by my first fitting. I will buy whichever dress i choose in the size that fits me now (one is a little snug) and once the fittings start I will stick to whatever weight I am at at that point.

It's not a bad idea to start now to figure out what you like.
  • You should def go 6-7 months before wedding at lease.. for example my dress just now came in and we ordered it in the winter. If you lose some pounds then they can always take the dress in a little.. but I know how hard it is to want to go shopping but you still feel like you have plenty of time. You could go and look at different shops and get an idea of what color, fabric, and style you like. Go ahead and try some on just to get a feel for it all and know what to stay away from and what looks good. Also there will be tons of new dresses coming out in the fall collections so you could always wait and see what the fall brings. . Hope this helps!!
