Bridal gown newbie questions

Hi everyone!
I don't know if I'm posting this question in the correct place on the forum here. I just got engaged earlier this month on October 8. Since then, I've been Googling information on bridal gowns, flowers, reception music., etc. I've been busy getting ideas but we're not making any actual plans yet.

I've added some bridal gowns to my 'favorites' on my knot.com account, and I've looked up some bridal stores close to me.

My question is: where/how can I get a nice, new bridal gown, at $500 or less?

We haven't set a budget yet, but I already know that I am not willing to pay the $800, $950, $1200 prices that I see online for many gowns. So I am thinking that $500 is my budget on the gown.

I've ran across the 'knock-off' wedding gown websites with gowns that are made and ship from China. Even though these are in my price range, I just don't have a good feeling about ordering from a company like that. I've also ran across House of Brides, which I can buy online or buy in a store that they have in/around Chicago. I am having a hard time finding a positive online review, though!

So, while I'm in the process of brainstorming, this is a question that has hit me. I don't know if ordering something reasonably priced online (from House of Brides, David's Bridal) is a good option, or if I really should spend the time visiting a small bridal shop for more personalized attention.

Thanks!
