Asking guests to wear a specific color to the wedding

Hey ladies,

I am having a small destination wedding in Mexico and I want to ask guests to incorporate the color yellow into their outfits. Before I go any further:

our guests are close family members and very close friends and no one will be upset by a request of asking them to wear a specific color.

I think that because we will have so few guests it will make all of the guests feel included, like everyone is part of the wedding party. Years ago Oprah had an episode where a person had an all white wedding and it looked absolutely beautiful!  Has anyone done something like this or have any ideas on how to ask? The invitations have already gone out, so I was thinking of sending something cute in the mail once we have a final guest count. I would add it to our wedding website, but it seems as if people aren't reading the information posted there. Any suggestions on what to send to the guests is greatly appreciated

Do not do any kind of poem. I would spread by word of mouth that you'd love for people to wear yellow.

i'd just like to know how you know that no one would be upset by your asking them to wear a certain color? unless you already asked them you have no idea if they would be annoyed by this or not. as a pp stated, some people hate yellow (myself included) or would have to go buy something yellow.

I think you should provide something specific like you were saying (although a fedora is a little much, especially if you aren't a hat person).  Maybe have a bunch of yellow gerberas or something else that's festive that people can hold or something.  If you have the budget maybe provide yellow wraps for the ladies and something gentlemanly and yellow for the guys.  You could even have boutoinnieres and corsages done in yellow that you ask people to wear for the ceremony.

also, add it to the website.  people will consult it prior to going to make sure they have all the information so you can post (in huge yellow letters maybe?) that you would like people to incorporate the color yellow somehow.

I think a nice compromise might be to do what they do at Indian weddings (I'm Indian/Canadian) - which is to have fresh cut flowers, with pins, for the women to put in their hair and for the  men to tuck in their suits. In your case, just make all the flowers yellow. This way, no one is inconvenienced and you get your bit of yellow.

<span style="font-weight:bold;">This times 100!  </span>I hate the way yellow looks on me, so I'd be even more put out that I have to buy something I will likely never wear again.  And I'm not just picking on yellow, not everyone loves all colors, so no matter what you pick, someone won't like it.

Don't get me wrong, i would do it for a close friend/family.  But I woudln't be happy about it.

Oh and I'll just say this:  I don't get to get dressed up often, so I *LOVE* going to weddings because it gives me an excuse to buy a dress that I love that I couldn't justify buying otherwise.  You'd be taking that away from me if you force me to wear a particular color.

I love the idea of giving everyone a yellow flower to pin on.  I would think that was so sweet at a wedding and would really make me feel special.

Since they are all close family members and very close friends as you stated, I would just spread by word of mouth. Are you having an engagement party or shower? That would be a good way to tell them all at once, and then just call the people who aren't at the party to inform them.

I really don't think there is anything wrong with sending something out. I also think the poem was quite cute!

But here's an idea too...
What about if you bought a bunch of yellow props?
Yellow bamboo umbrella, fans, flowers, hats, flip-flops, maybe some fun plastic yellow framed sunglasses, perhaps a beach ball (if its on the beach), feather boa's, crazy big yellow straw sun hats, maybe even some mexican items (since its in Mexico..) pancho, maracas.. ect.  Perhaps you can incorperate this into some of your photos? (Sorry... I got a little carried away thinking of items!)

That way no one is offended (I wouldnt be... but you never know who will be!) and it will be fun for all of your guests!

Spread it via word of mouth. Don't tell people they need to wear a specific color. Providing a fedora or pocketfold for them would be okay, in my opinion.

I look awful in yellow. As a guest:
   If I got a poem asking me to wear yellow, I would think it was tacky and more than a little ridiculous and I would not wear yellow.
   If I found out by word of mouth that the bride wanted me to wear yellow, I would think "Wow, she's a control freak," and I would not wear yellow.
   If I was given a yellow fedora to wear at the wedding, I would say "No way am I putting that cheap ugly thing on my head," and I would not wear yellow.
    If I was given yellow flowers to wear, I would wear them.

I don't think there's any good way to ask your guests to wear a specific color- especially one that isn't at all a popular clothes choice. Certainly you can provide something if it is subtle enough, but asking? No.
