e-rings

I posted something similar to this awhile ago but I had to ask again:

I got alot of information about what kinds of colored gems to get if I didn't want to get an actual diamond.

I had my heart set on an emeral engagement ring, but alot of people told me that they chip and scratch very easily.

My new question would be. what about a peridot ring? It is the month of August's birthstone color and although it isn't the dark green like the emerald I wanted, it is still green. I just love green! haha

Is peridot a "soft" stone and chip easily, too? Any information is appreciated! TIA

Re: e-rings

  • peridot seems to be simmilar to emeralds and there are chip and scratch warnings for it. I went the colored gemstone route too and have a pink saphire, saphires are very strong, there not diamonds but they are pretty tough. and they come in green.

or there is green garnet, another tough stone

the green saphire is alot cheaper though it seems, good luck
  • Topaz is hard & durable (scratch resistant, etc) as semi-precious stones go; green topaz can be a little harder to find but I"m sure you could if you were interested.

talk to a jerweler about a setting, too, that would possibly be not just pretty & your style :) but "protective" of the stone. I think something like bezel set, where the stone is "encased" is pretty secure and may expose less fo the stone to potential damage.

  • I agree with the advice you've received about emeralds.  They can also be a little cloudy and not hold their own when set with other stones.  You should look into green garnets!  They're really special stones and are more brilliant and less flawed than emeralds.  I have a tsavorite.  They're hard to find, but James & Co. in New York specializes in them.

  • thanks so much ladies! i am definately going to check into the green garnet!

  • I have a sapphire engagement ring and love it (you'll see in my signature) ...

PP mentioned it's very durable and they are.. sapphires rank just below diamonds on the Moh's scale.

They come in all shades (though we mostly see blue)..
