Reception dress?

I was going to buy a dress to wear at the reception and then I was thinking maybe I'd just stay in my wedding dress. What is everyone elses thoughts on this?

Re: Reception dress?

  • I think if I am spending money on a beautiful once in a lifetime type of dress, I would want to keep it on as long as possible.  It isn't a play, or a concert, or a show.  There is not a need to "shock" guests with a costume change.

  • I agree. While I may be more comfortable in a short dress at the reception, it's the only day I'll ever wear my wedding dress. I want to show it off and wear it as long as possible!

  • I'm in love with my wedding dress and can't imagine actually wanting to change out of it for the reception. I do think 'going away' dresses can be really pretty if you are doing a grand exit. But for me, I'm going to save my money and stay in my wedding gown. After all, like PP said, I'm never going to be able to wear it again.

Ditto this exactly! I want to wear my dress for as long as possible :-D
  • CA2 said it perfect. They will most likely love your gown and want to see it on you the whole night!

  • I have a reception dress...and am in LOVE with my wedding dress. I think it is totally personal opinion - I will not be changing until after the cake cutting and toasts...which will put me changing about 10pm. By then all of the "wedding" stuff will be over and it will be time to party and dance the night away (at least until 11:30pm). I am anticipating most of the older and younger crowd to be leaving by then and just have friends and immediate family around. I want to be able to dance and have a great time - dancing would be very difficult in my wedding dress hence the change. It will be a surprise to my FI and I'm so excited. I will be ready to change into something less bulky for our grand exit anyway so it serves it's purposes.
Not to mention - we are leaving the hotel at 7am the next morning and I would have no way to return my wedding dress to my mom before our flight - unless she met us there which I don't want her to have to do. Packing up the short reception dress is much easier!

Again - total personal preference. Just because I have a reception dress doesn't mean I'm not in love with my wedding dress!!

I am getting a reception dress! Absolutely!!

I LOVE my wedding dress, but I also love to dance! and want a short dress.

Do what YOU want. Everyone feels differently. And, come day-of, if you don't want to change dresses, you don't! I'm not planning on spending more than $200 on my reception dress, so if I end up not wearing it, who cares, and you can always sell it afterwards.
  • I wore my dress for the ceremony, the entire reception (lots of dancing, etc) and then to the afterparty in the hotel bar after that. I didn't want to take it off!

  • Thanks everyone! :)
  • I absolutely LOVE my wedding dress, but I am wearing a reception dress as well.

My first dress is beautiful, but a little bit uncomfortable to wear.  The back of it is kind of scratchy, and unfortunately I didn't notice this until the fitting, when I had already paid for the dress!

I bought a second dress that is more comfortable, and surprisingly just as beautiful as my first dress (though a different style).

I am SO not an overly fashion-minded person, so I'm surprised that I ended up with 2 dresses, but the LAST thing I want is to not enjoy my wedding because my dress is uncomfortable!
